View Full Version : Melted Duron's build thread

I'm not sure, maybe this should actually be called the 'Help Melted Duron make up his mind' thread instead :D

So anyways, he wasn't all that happy with the little Vapo before, and wanted it modded again even before he got it in the post

So it's come back to me, and we're in the process of finalising the details of the build.

What we do know...

Chieftec full Tower case:

It's being installed into the top of the Chieftec, so a TL5 or TLE6 if I get my hands on it, and it fit's, will be going in there, if he ends up getting a replacement for the little BD50 that was on the little Vapo.

Chilly1 small 120mm condensor, a mild upgrade from the standard condensor, and the ideal fit for the case too :D

Head choices...

Well first it was a chilly head, then Kayl's head caught his eye, then Mr. Joe Cool's head was the choice. I'm still not 100% but I have a feeling it'll be the Joe Cool that wins, as it's ideal for the mounting system he'll be using.

So anyways, some pics of the 'stuff'

So that's the kitchen table with all the stuff potentailly going into a vapo 'redux'

So we'll see how it takes shape, then I'll get more posted

Cheers

I agree Jort.

The head from Joe Cool is stunning. The machine quality is amazing, and the attention to detail is unreal.

There are a few points I'd like to see him improve as with any head, but the design is great.

I think that in testing Kayl's would give slighly better performance to be honest, but the mount allows for GPU easily in it's current format, using a ring for the mount, and being so narrow with respect to the center section, the holes for the 'rail mount' that Duron's going to use for his dothan should be the best of the mounts really.

This head was meant for testing, but without even doing any testing I already know I'll be having more from him shortly :)

I'll be putting one of the Kayl heads onto one of my Prommies, and hopefully get more of Joe's heads to use for testing on the other one too.

All in fun, and Melted's case WILL get alu or alu checker plate for the compressor support.

Cheers

Umm isn't putting the compressor up top gonna make the whole thing top heavy. Thats just asking for a tip-over.:slap:

Like every one of the old Vapochill classic/se/pe/xe/xe2 series made? :stick: :slap:

The only way this thing will be tipping over is if it get's kicked VERY hard. and being a chieftec case, more likely you would break a bone in your foot.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot to talk about the controller.

Still undecided, but looking like a good possibility of a new style froster value to be used for that.

Still a possibility of an Xe Froster, but we'll see.

So this is more or less why I haven't really gotten much done with his system. I'm never 100% sure what I'm going to build  :D

Should be very nice when it's done though. Hopefully final decisions come soon and can move forward with the build :)

Ahh that brings back memories of when i modded a similar full tower chieftec case and squashed a modded vapo PE in, way back in 2002 :)

Iirc i drilled out the rivets on the centre plate, cut it in half and riveted the remaining bit back in. Then riveted some support plate across the 2 bars going from the front to back of the case.

Just a little update, and of course, another change of plan

A few pics with the new phone's camera. It's not that bad, I just have shaky hands :D

http://www.picturehosting.com/images/GrayMole/photo0038.jpg

As you can see, another victim of 'quiet rotary' fever :D

The size and shape of it, it's like it was made for an install like this. I've just bent up some steel for now, and may or may not use Alu plate, but the steel is a lot stronger and it's got to survive shipping so we'll see. It'll get some nice paint if a steel plate is used, and it's a chieftech case, so steel seems more appropriate :p: The compressor only wieghs about 6 kilo's by itself though, so it's pretty light compared to some others.

http://www.picturehosting.com/images/GrayMole/photo0041.jpg

Sideways...

http://www.picturehosting.com/images/GrayMole/photo0042.jpg

Not really room in the back for a fan, but may just use a top mounted fan as there's just enough room for a 25mm thick one.

http://www.picturehosting.com/images/GrayMole/photo0040.jpg

One of Chilly's old 120mm square condensors. Not as good as the newer ones, but ideal in this case as it's the right size, and will still give some decent performance.

http://www.picturehosting.com/images/GrayMole/photo0039.jpg

And the fan grill and adapter are a pretty good fit in the front, a little modding is needed to make it fit better, but that will be done soon too :)

So yeah, just sizing things up and getting the 'go ahead' from Melted and now that we've got a little more direction in the build, I can start doing some of the needed mods to the case for real :woot:

Cheers

Thats very nice mate :D, is performance of the little rotary like a 1/4 8cc hermetic compressor?

MeltedDuron
06-30-2006, 03:42 PM
gray I absolutely love it! also you can't really blame me for picking a better fitting and better performing compressor over a little hermetic, it was a no brainer looking forward to progress now we have the final spec sorted out (it's taken like a year lol)

Gray Mole
06-30-2006, 03:52 PM
Yup, it's been a long, and very strange road :D but getting there.

Nope, don't blame you a bit. I'd have chosen it too.

The compressor seems to fall somewhere in the 1/4 to 1/3hp range, but I haven't tested it with one of the 'big' evaps, know good performers at higher loads, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing it work on this one.

Come to think of it I still need to send one down to you don't I Froudeg? That's what happens when you get old you know, you start to forget stuff, like your name, and where you live :p:

Already told you, when the proper plate is made (and hoping it can still be alu checker instead of ghetto steel  ) then I can start installing the rest.

I can't get that on a saturday night, or a sunday morning.

Dam, can't even take a night off these days :p:

Will update as soon as I have what I need to move forward.

Gray Mole
07-09-2006, 06:23 PM
Well it's 2am and I'm done for the night, but the plate is fully installed. I had to strip the top of the case to be able to work on the phase inside, but it's only rivets and I have plenty :D

http://www.picturehosting.com/images/GrayMole/dsc02937.jpg

http://www.picturehosting.com/images/GrayMole/dsc02938.jpg

http://www.picturehosting.com/images/GrayMole/dsc02939.jpg

That's as far as I've gotten, but stripping the case and measuring things out takes time. Measure twice, cut once

The wife won't let me make noise after midnight so it's all had to be quiet work, but it's taken a shape. I 'offset' the compressor on purpose to allow some room for the small accumulator, and the transformer for the Value Froster that we've settled on for the controller.

The froster will live 'downstairs' in the small wasted space under the PSU, ideal spot really. Nothing else will really fit there, and it's close to where it needs to be :)

Cheers guys

That's a really lovely compressor you got, noise level?

Gray Mole
07-09-2006, 06:35 PM
Hey Mr. S :) sorry I keep missing you on msn :( nothing but work these days.

I can't really tell you an exact noise level as I don't have a meter for that ;) but it's very quiet. I'm starting to think that it's a rebadged Hitachi Scroll and not a rotary (similar but different) at all. It's very quiet, and it looks exactly like the Hitachi horizontal scrolls I've seen before. Exactly like.

I'll have to get a sound file done when this is all together so you can hear what it's like. It still has the rotary noise to it, just very very quiet. Similar to Vapo compressor noise, but in a 'rotary' style? lol anyways, will try to get a sound recording for everyone who's interested.

I couldn't really do a recording of the testbed one, as it's got a 90+cfm 240v fan on it, and that is very loud. I couldn't hear the compressor at all for it, which is a nice indication of it's noise. I may swap that for a quiet 12v fan and get a file done with the sounds if I get time :)

Alu plate is 3.5mm, 4.5 incl the 'ridges' of the checkerplate. It's incredibly strong, but still very light. It's also very very hard to cut considering it's Alu. Every time I hit a ridge it's hard work to get through.

But it looks pretty and does the job. The only downside is trying to polish the back side :p

Was hoping for more progress over the weekend, but hit some tough stuff so less than I wanted.

Still, it's coming along, and the line is Chrome, as promised ;)

Looks like everything will fit just barely as I'd wanted, so that's nice to see. I'll probably be doing things in reverse of what I would normally do, and wire it up right before getting into charging and testing.

I just need to get a larger size of the heatshrink I wanted to use with the chrome, the Joe Cool head is just a little bigger, so need something bigger to match it :)

Thanks everyone :)

The case is a little heavier up top than before, but being all steel it's already heavy ;) so not too much of a difference :D

Don't worry Mr. S, your package should be with you pretty quick if not already, sent the tracking number on msn ;)

I'm just glad that Melted approves of how it's shaping up, I didn't want to have to strip and redo it

The Froster fits like a glove in this case, pics can't really show that, and it'll get caged up after the wiring is done a little like the V2000 was in silver. It's the finishing touches that make all the difference really.

But now it's the sleeving to contend with. the only other real 'chore' is going to be the front door, I'm still not sure how I'm going to make it 'pretty' enough but I have a couple of ideas, and I'm hoping to make the display fit into it as well, if I can get the wiring to sit nice and still allow the door to open and not look a mess. It's mainly the airflow, but I'll be seeing if the filter grills will fit nice and look right, as that's the easiest way to open it up for the airflow needed.

Cheers

Maybe cut a hole in the door to size, and just put some metal lining around the cut. Let the grill show thru the hole...

Something like this maybe?

http://www.picturehosting.com/images/GrayMole/dsc02971.jpg

not sure if I want to take away the curved line of the door or not. The 120mm grill won't fit inside the trimmed off area, don't have a 92mm (not sure if they do a filter grille in that size but will check) and 80mm is just too small, would need 2 and I don't want that look.

And you can find these compressors through the suppliers, just I got lucky on the price a little or I wouldn't be using them.
