My LG 701B died today which I bought 4 - 5 years ago for around $120 so I'm looking for a new CRT 17" monitor for around $150 - 170 max (or possible 19" but I don't think u can get any good one for such price). I would like the monitor to support at least 85Hz @ 1024x768 and 100Hz @ 800x600 and preferable as sharp text and image as possible. :)
Any ideas of which brand and models I should take a look at are welcome, I've looked around but can't really decide and since I have no knowledge in monitors.
Right now I use an old AcerView 7178ie that my cousin brought here for me, it says manufacturing date is January 1997 :( and I must say it's far from being great, quite blurry text, very dark, colors are a bit bad too and it supports max 85Hz no matter the resolution (according to the drivers). So I really need to buy a new one...

A 17" LCD would be a much better investment, and you should be able find a decent quality one for under $200. I bought a LCD a year ago to build a projector, but I liked it so much I refused to take it apart (and I always thought I would never switch from CRT's).
But, if you really want another bulky CRT, look at your local PC recycling center that sells monitors; they should have something for cheap

I don't like LCDs, I'm a performance & gaming freak, I could care less for size, I've never moved my comp for 5 years either (cept when upgrading) so I don't mind the bulkyness. :D
Really another reason I don't like LCDs are cuz of the price, I would have to buy an LCD for like $250+ to be as satisfied as with a cheap CRT. It's like this, almost any CRT is fine while cheap LCDs sux (same goes for optimal mice) and that's all those below $250 or so for my liking and I don't wanna spend that much right now being a student especially not on a monitor. When you can get a decent 8ms LCD 17" for around $150 I might consider it. Also I prefer the CRTs crisp and sharp looking texture.
Well I still wanna spend around $150 max for the new monitor so LCD isn't an option then.
Well I found what I want I think now http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/crtmonitors/e2series/e70fplussb/ Will prolly go for this one, should satisfy me a lot and costs around $150. :)

Most Samsung CRTs are very good, i have the 19" Samsung 785mb and it is simply amazing. I run 1600x1200 @ 75Hz and the text and picture quality is second to none. The only hitch i can think of would be that i doubt you could find one for less than $200.

I've used this ViewSonic E70FSB for ~2 days now and I'm not impressed so far. The only prob I have with it is the sharpiness could have been better. Even my old cheap ~4½ year old LG had many times sharper image.
I've googled however and found CRT monitors requires a 100hr break-in period for optimal results. Is there really a big difference after that break-in period I wonder? Wish my old LG hadn't died on me, had no complaints about it and it was a ~$110 monitor and this ViewSonic one costed $150 and had a good dot pitch value and I thought it would be good... :(
Perhaps I should just return it... after all the sharpness is priority #1 for me now I see, the color and image quality are nice with this monitor tho but that's not as important for me. If I use Image sharpening in nvidia control panel I can get it looked a lot sharper but still not really satisfied and with the LG one I never even touched "color correction" section in Nvidia cpanel.
