i can't seem to get the stock cooler on a pentium d 940 installed securely.
The manual says to just push down the 4 things till they click but i can only get one side in properly. Then it seems kinda lop sided as the other two tabs won't snap in. There are also rotating arrows on each tab... I think it locks the tabs into place when you rotate them but the manual says nothing about it. I'm pushing till my thumbs go sore but I can't seem to get it secure.... :(
Has anyone had experience with these coolers?
How tight should these 4 things be? One of the tabs/peg things is still pretty loose. I think I've got the other three secured though...

Yes... I've mounted "a few" LGA775 CPU's... and I think the "standard" plastic clip mount is bad. Just my opinion though.
It may seem you have misaligned the clips in a couple of holes...during your "sore thumb pushing" rendering the clips useless (damaged).
The tabs should be in the "lock" postion.. (check the "manual").. but you will see it by testing first ("pre mounting").
Then you align the clip(s) in the hole(s).. push two at a time (diagonally) until you hear a click.. No real force is necessary.. Then you do the same with the two remaing (diagonally) clips.
It is much better to buy a aftermarket cooler that use a backing plate of som sort and springloaded screw-in fasteners.. (like most watercooling blocks/kits.. which the Pentium D CPU's absolutely needs for serious overclocks)

Thanks man...It seems a little loose though. Makes me nervous...
I fired it up and the BIOS is reading about 53C on the CPU... Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Personally, I just removed the clips and used #6 threaded rods with springs/washers and #6 knurled nuts. Makes it super easy to get a good mount.

Took me several tries to figure out how to mount those things... Now I can do it instantly but I've done it like 7 times... The 6th time I put it on fine and everything the stood the PC up and turned it on and ran it for a while.. but the temps were like 75C so I opened it up and put the heatsink back on as it had fallen off...

mine wasn't too hard to figure out, just push down the clip things...it was harder getting the thing off
