In my quest to have one of the fastest air cooled computers, here is where the journey has brought me. Both of these are on fan controllers so they're nice and quiet unless I'm benchmarking.;)

Hah, can you fit any PCI cards underneath that beast? :D Tell us more about your hardware & temps and whatnot!

I don't think even my creative sound card would fit in the lowest pci slot with that monster.

Are they crossfire? (prolly not, they wouldn't fit :p:)

you can forget about using pci cards unless you have a mb with many..... You could get away with using the bottom one. Temps..... both cards idle around 32°C with ambient temps around 20°. With the fans at full blast and 1.575v on the core, the temps max out between 53°-60° depending on ambient temps. I had a benching session Sunday morning with ambient temps at 18°C and max temp loaded was 53°. I set my personal high in 3DMark05 with 14066.

how you mount the heatsink?

how you mount the heatsink?
drilled holes directly in the heatsink then tapped them.

Are you kidding..... That thing is worse than stock..... poor design. A few forum members gambled on that thing and lost.

can we get a bottom side pic of the two? i plan on doing the same with a spare amd64 hsf i have laying around. don't think my tornado will fit on it but we'll see:D it should definitely work much better than the stock cooling on my 7800GT/

single card....... I'm not moving to Crossfire any time soon.
can we get a bottom side pic of the two?
I have some for the Dynatron..... I'll see what I can do.
Very nice mod there. Wouldn't there be a bit of a cause for concern regarding the card warping from the excess weight?

Reminds me of some of macci's P4 coolers he had stuck on some of his air cooled cards. Very chunky.

I use card keepers...... they're pretty snug against the card so I doubt that will happen. Considering the 4 hole mounting on these cards it appears the weight it pretty evenly distributed.

what's the noise ?
charlie
05-10-2006, 03:56 PM
what's the noise ?
it's a Vantec Tornado which means @ 12v it's like 605dB or some sh**... at 5 or 6v it's manageable.

close ups of the mounts?
very nice btw

what's the noise ?
What Charlie said..... loud..... however surprisingly it's not as bad as when I had it mounted on the cpu heatsink..... I think because it's facing down in the case it's somewhat muffled. Of course all my loud fans are on fan controllers and the tornado is usually run at about 3500rpms. Going that slow it's just a deep rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound. Not bad at all for normal usage. I only crank up the power when benchmarking.

I've got a Delta EHE on my videocard, bout the same kinda thing as the Vantec, and if you consider that manageable at 6v, I assume you were raised on either an airstrip or gun range.
And scientifimically speaking, for every bel above 30, due to the air pressure, the sound multiplies times a sicilian, so though 605 doesn't seem that loud, it really is, because you're older by the time it hits you, except for fish.

That's nice ones!
I've made some changes to my X1800XT too, those little heatsinks are still in the box but I'll put them later on the card. With this cooler & "cool" air my best OC is: core 792Mhz / mem 965Mhz.
Swiftech Socket-A cooler and the original backplate from X1800XT.

It takes a few slot but I don't need them.

DELTA is in order. :D

Boble, did you have to drill new holes for that or does it already line up pretty close? Also what is the model number/name of that because it loks perfect for me if it performs well.
Boble76
05-26-2006, 09:50 AM
Yes, I had to drill new 3mm holes into cooler. I don't know the model of that but it's socket-A (Swiftech). I think all of those Swiftech-coolers are pretty close between themselves. (sorry my english) :p:
Hey, I think I found the real one. Swiftech Heat Sink MCX462-U for AMD Socket A (http://www.directron.com/mcx462b.html)
That's it.

Looks like I'll have to find one second hand then as they no longer sell over here in UK, at least not that I can find. Thanks for the help.

This one's for houserat.
My latest build thus far:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v363/navig/Video%20Heatsinks/IMG_0028.jpg
Ultra socket A, cost me US$6. Looks pretty!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v363/navig/Video%20Heatsinks/Backsideplate.jpg
Using the stock back plate.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v363/navig/Video%20Heatsinks/Mountthru.jpg
Screws mount thru into threaded holes outside the copper block.
At full rpms, the fan is audible, but still quieter than the stock heatsink at idle speeds. Load temps hit about 45c--the stock cooler was in excess of 80c.

Those Ultra socket A coolers seem to be the most used for X1k cards but you can't get them over here. Damit why can't I ever get what I want grrr.

there ya go, you from the uk right?
Do all socket A heatsinks fit on eg a 7900GT?
I've got a BTX-case, so heatpipes would be very usefull.
The only problem is that I only have 10 cm of spacing...

Boble76, Navig & svl2: You guys bring honor to the art of extreme air cooling :D
BTW Boble76, I have two of the Swiftech coolers but I thought they were just too heavy to mount on a card. I guess I was wrong. ;)

Back when i used to put crazy coolers on my video cards, i always got excellent results with all copper microfin 1U CPU coolers. The differences in temps between them with a decent fan and a bigger socket A cooler wasn't that far off. Plus it gave me much more room in my case.
