For those using this heatsink on a naked core, did you use some kind of shim?

also, what's the "I" plate for?

Depends on core, on a64 it is 50-50, usually I didn't if you are careful. On dothan/Yonah it is very advisable although it seems Yonah core is stronger than dothan

No shims for me on either one of rigs.

Use some foam for cushioning around the core. I used some akasa pax mate in the last month and it works great. Under pressure it shrinks down exactly to the height of the core and you get safety for the core on one hand and perfect contact on the other. ;)
