system no longer boots

hey guys, i was sleeving the cables on my rig tonight, and obviously was forced to unplug all the ide cables, etc. when i booted back up, i got a message saying "reboot and select proper boot device." i checked the boot priority first, and it was set to the hdd then cd rom drive. i kept getting the same message, and thought it then might be a dead ide cable. i swapped it with another, only to get the same message. any suggestions would be appreciated.

i would try another 4pin molex power connector to the hard drive

well for now, i have the problem fixed. i had a feeling the ide channel died, so i put the hdd and dvd drive on a secondary channel. sure enough, it worked. looks like my primary ide channel is dead or something.
