View Full Version : 165 or 170?

Let me just start off by saying I have a 4400 and it is crap. Takes like 1.74 volts to bench at 2.8, and I am looking for better. I know Opterons clock really good, so I am looking at them. Im just in a little pickle, I guess.
I like the 170 because of the 10x multi, but I dont like it because it is 70 bucks more than the 165 for just the 10x multi. What it really comes down to is the overclockability of the chips, and thats why I need you guys.
I have a DFI Lanparty SLI-DR Expert and I am running a 7900GTX. For cooling I have a Big Typhoon which at 1.74 volts keeps my cpu idleing around 36C. I really want to be able to bench at 3.0Ghz (I know its a long shot), so which chip will I have the most success overclocking with? Or does it really just come down the stepping?

Yes, I know it is dangerous but I am getting a new cpu soon and I figured I might as well squeeze everything I got out of this one.
ambient temps are 22C and my loaded is around 50C. Yes I know it is high.
Anyways which chip is recommended for 3Ghz benching?

well it is an expert so temp is not calibrated properly

being an eXpert.. the temps shown are 10 to 15 degrees low than the real ones correct?

No, I have checked it with 4 or 5 different programs. I am pretty sure that is the right temp. Anyways can someone please answer my question of which chip is better for 3Ghz benching?

programs all read the same inaccurate temp sensor on the motherboard which is calculating a temp based off of what the chip says, in the watercooling threads guys with experts show below ambient temps for their overclock chips... and that is just plain impossible

So I lowered it to 1.55 and my temps are around 31C, does this mean they are really 41C?

only way to find the real ones is to take a temperature reader and locate the actually spot on the mobo and take the temp from there.
also remember you wanna get as close to the core as possible when taking temps.. so dont still the reader on your hs.. actaully get it on the ihs if you can

You have a better chance with a 170, but it really depends on the stepping
you should check out the dual core opteron thread to get an idea of what steppings have a chance of doing 3.0GHz

In CPU-Z it says my Rev. is A3. So should I add 10C or not?
Also is there any place I can buy from that guaruntees their steppings? I remember seeing a post somewhere about a place, but I cant remember the name.

It's an eXpert so add 10 to 12 degress to reported temps. Looks like 48C idle...

Ok, so I have looked around at the prices for 170 and 165. What I want to know is if the performance increase of the 170 worth the price?

that's up to you, there are no guarantees so is the 10 multi worth the extra money TO YOU?

From what ive seen, max clock is up to the stepping, pretty much.
Look at the Dual Opty thread, 3.0GHz is a good mix of 170s and 165s.
170 just has the advantage of a 10x multi - 1:1 3.0 if you can find memory that does 300 and doesent die after a couple of months.
Up to you to decide if thats worth the cash.

i havent seen anyone 10x300 with mem 1:1. a lot of people are using dividers for such high clocks.

Its easy if you run 2x 512, tougher to find a 2x1 kit thatll do that and have lasting power :P

I personally would get the Opteron 165 and save some money. The DFI board should easily be able to reach a 334 HTT making it 3GHz.

Yea really, so your opty is at 3.0ghz? What voltage is it? Also what ram are you using? Sorry for so many quetions.
::EDIT::
I just looked in your sig and saw it. Ok, I guess its time to start looking around for some decent steppings. Tonight I will try and find the highest HTT my board can do, so I can see if its worth the money to invest in the 10x multi.

well it doesnt appear my board has a very high htt, it maxed out at 328. So I probably have to get the 170. Im looking around for some good steppings right now.
btw, ive got my 4400 for sale. pm me if your interested.
