Hi everyone, I've ordered an AOpen i975Xa-YDG board, while I'm waiting for delivery, I'd like some advice on heatsinks for the the CPU and a passive replacement for the Aopen northbridge fan?

Any suggestions welcomed.

Many thanks

Any s478 cooler will fit, I have TT BT and it works just fine :) You can also get some passive cooling like sonic tower. As for NB, zalman passive NB heatsink should fit as well.

XP90 for the cpu, and unplug the chipset fan, it will work fine :)

Kiwi, Tyrou are you running those heatsinks horizontal like in a normal case
or vertical in an open bench environment? 800grams from the BT sounds
lots with no heatspreader protection, when mounted horizontally.

Thanks

I wouldn´t go for a heavy cooler, because of missing IHS.

I used a Zalman 7000B-AlCu, but XP-90, AC Freezer 4 or a Noctua NH-U9 should work fine!

Or even this one:

Just remember, it´s a mobile CPU...;)

Horizontal but I am using old athlon xp like pads (made from K-flex insualation) to even pressure on core

I never saw a beter fanless chipset cooler than the Thermalright HR-05

hmm not sure about you guys, but I had to slap on an IHS to mount a Socket 478 cooler. If the surface is completely flat on the heatsink, then it will hit the screws on the 4 corners of the bracket before it makes contact with the chip. Adding an IHS gave me enough added height so that it would make contact before hitting the screws in the 4 corners.

As for NB, zalman passive NB heatsink should fit as well.

I tried the zalman NB heatsink, won't fit. Just unplug the NB fan, works very well.

I second that. I'm using Zalman 7000A-AlCu.

I tried HR-05, the M-shape clip is too long, I cannot hook it to the mobo.

Are there any waterblocks that will fit the northbridge of this mobo? Failing that any decent quality copper coolers with a fan?

Hi Snatchmonkey, the i975Xa-YDG uses loops to attach the NB, not the usual push pins, I've only found this copper cooler that supports loops, Zalman's only support push pin installs.

After going from Air to Water I´m using Alphacool SNB-A (http://www.caseking.de/shop/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=27_280_428&products_id=3680), fixed with spare-spokes fromm my bicycle...;)

Thanks solaa. I'll have to check a bit later if that will fit as I note it is quite a small distance between the hooks on the mobo. Looks like an excellent cooler.

That looks like a standard sized AMD chipset block stummerwinter, so it should be possible to mount many/any other amd chipset blocks using a similar mechanism. I'll have to keep an eye out for one... Thanks guys :)

Nice!

What are your Temps?

Any increase with the IHS?

solaa21

OK, using MBM5 I get;

Case 61'c
CPU 45'c

Using Speedfan I get;

CPU 40'c
CPU 45'c
Aux 60'c

Using Core temp I get;

58'c
58'c

That was a few minutes after a gaming session, I think passive is fine for
HTPC, but maybe too much for gaming etc, I'll add the heatsink fan tomorrow
and see what happens.

I'm running a Zalman 7700CU. Works great. Temps are in the load 30s at full load with 1.5v

Hey,

I'm gonna try and use a Zalman 7000 with a Yonah/Merom on an MSI Speedster board. I have some foam AXP mounts so I'll use them to reduce the risk of crushing the core!

ya, that last one is freaking ugly but can your pretty rig do THIS (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=295740) ?

PS i (now) use electrical tape (about 4x layers) as "pads" to protect the core
