I need to buy a cpu this weekend, and have up to $400 to spend. I havent bought a cpu since october so I havent been keeping up with what are the best steppings and where to get them. I have had a 170, and I didnt see any benefits to the larger cache of opterons. I am only interested in the highest clock speed on air. Have any good steppings come from flickerdown lately? I have had great success with 3800 x2's but would really like to finally crack 3gig on air. the 9x multi of the 165 wont be an issue either, this mainboard is good up to at least 375mhz. this cpu will replace the one in my sig. any input appreciated. thanx.

I wouldn't replace that CPU, 290*10 is great, and to find a better cpu will be a hard task. BTW, you have some stickys with the bests steppings, give them a read ;)

i can get a 0610 dpmw but $350 seems a little pricey for a oem 165. more than knowing which are the good steppings, i need to know where to get the better steppings, which i cant find in the stickies.

I think I'd just get myself a 165. The multiplier isn't going to make much of a difference at all. No use getting another x2 3800. The Opterons use marginally better materials. I wish someone woulda told me that when I was buying my 3000+
