I've been a bit fascinated by emulating consoles on the computer, and this project I've followed for a while now and I wanted to show you how far it has progressed lately. Note, PCSX2 can be used if you own a PS2 and dump the BIOS from your own PS2 console.

Yup that's v0.8.1 which was released like 1 year ago. The speed has been improved incredibly in v0.9, FFX for example used to run max 7 fps ingame with any comp and now with a computer like mine for example it runs like 12 - 60 fps ingame and without need of save games. :)

Compability has been improved incredibly too, from earlier running only 2-3 games like u said to like 200+ that works fairly good. And there was no sound before, now there is sound that works almost perfectly in any game that runs. Right now they are working on to improve dual core and multithreading support, tweaking the code etc. in order to improve speed. I think once v1.0 is released the emulator might work very well, but it's probably a year or so until that. On the other hand, I know v0.9.1 is being worked on atm, tho I have no idea about how much improvements it offers and when it would be released.

On this emulator already ~20 fps seems to be quite smooth performance. Only games that runs about 60 fps would be the Growlanser series but that game has quite poor graphics.

The emulator is CPU dependant, gfx card, ram etc. makes only a very minor difference. Even a FX5200 gfx card would be enough but lets say any pixelshading 3.0 supporting card is more than enough, since if you want you can use pixelshader 3.0 with a gfx plugin in this emulator. No1 can say what's the minimum requirements for now, would be interesting how a A64 3GHz+ or upcoming Conroe would perform tho.

Can't believe how fantastic job these guys are doing, from the way they are working. I wish I had coding skills like that. It's pretty hard to get a ps2 emulator running nicely when you have to work without any proper documents and "guess" how it's working and then test the newly added feature etc. One little discovery could open the door to a multiple fps or compability increase for example. This PCSX2 team truly has some script wizzies.

Myself would rather play ps2 on my comp than my ps2 console once it's working perfectly since I think emulators have some rather nice benefits over the real console. With emulators you can control the speed, tweak gfx to make it look better than the real console, save a little anywhere, shorther loading times etc.

Well I just thought I'd give you guys a little news & info about ps2 emulation scene.

I really hope we get to the point where you can just drop a ps2 disc in and have ot work like a PS2.
But with all the emulation benefits.

Looks good!! I've been playing FF7 on ePSXe (PS1 emu) on my PC, probably been a decade since I last played and its still superb :D My PS2 has started making a worrying crunky sound so I might have to look into a decent PS2 emulator sooner than I thought.

very cool indeed, it would be great to have the pc be able to play ps2 games just by dropping them in and running a lil emulation program...
