IS hard drive cooling really necessary? I mean its not liek you can overclock them, they run at decent temps anyone (my raptor X runs at 25 when gaming, my wd 250s run at 34 degrees during large transfers) umm so why cool them? if im wrong tell me

The server drive at my school (cheetah 15000rpm) ran at 80'C, burning to the touch, so I made an external enclosure for it, now it runs at 30'C

Normally harddrive cooling is not necessary.

max operating temp of cheetah is 55'C? 80'C? must have been an innaccuracy in teh sensor? anyway what server was this in? a prebuilt or? and what casing and where was it located? ventilation? details?

It was in RAID 0+1, cheetah 36.6Ghz 15krpm. It was not a sensor failure, cuz it literally burnt my hand when I touched it.

All 4 drives were in the same rack with little if no spacing at all, they experienced crash and data loss many times.

Try this HD cooling device. Nice and silent

I was planning on using something similar, but all 4 5" bays were occupied.

just make sure they have some air flow.

You probably don't need hard drive cooling unless you have a 15k RPM HDD, but a little airflow wouldn't hurt. Usually in newer cases the HDD rack has a fan in front of it or some sort of airflow, but I don't believe it's necessary. I am a cooling freak though, so I just attached a 120MM fan to my HDD rack (I run case less).

most 160gb+ 7200rpm+ drives need some type of airflow on them if you have more than one drive and definately when they are in close proximity.
