Was using the stock amd opteron hs for a while then decided why not upgrade to a thermalright xp-90c and a 90mm tornado. After using it fore about a week i realised why this wasnt a good idea...first of all noise...noise? 60db? ouch.... second of all performance gain? minimal. so i decided to try something else, stick a 120mm panaflo on the stock hs with a 120-80mm fan adaptor...the result? better performance than the xp-90c by about 3 degrees. so next time your considering investing in a new hs for air cooling consider whether ur actually gonna get any performance gains with it.
thermalright xp-90c is $54.00CAD + tornado $24.99CAD
panaflo $29.99CAD adaptor $4.00CAD

well.. the xp90c is a better heatsink there's no doubt..
you can ofcourse stick a 120mm on it aswell.
I'm not saying your set up is bad, it's far from it but you can't rule an xp90c out the equation imo..
also, check the xp90c hasnt got a concave/convex base coz they often do.. I had to lap mine and now it's great.. I guess thats one plus of the stock hsf its base is almost perfect...

well.. the xp90c is a better heatsink there's no doubt..
The difference is xtremely small though, it's only 2-3 degrees with the same fan and rpm.

both hs lapped and using arctic ceramique, using built in sensors so accuracy is not great but sitll comparatively speaking the xp-90 is not yielding spend another $54+tax in the air cooling market performance imo
im going watercooling anyway now but regardless...btw whats with the made in a basement look of the hsf on the asus 7900gt? as soon as i took it out of the box i was like wtf switching with vf900
