"pay a fee to skip commercials"

why are companies so stupid.

this has got to be one of the dumbest ideas ever

This is the stupidest idea ever. It seems like every year companies try to take more and more control over technology. If this goes through, next the furniture companies might want to look into making it so we can't leave our chairs during the commerical too.

Something would be hacked to get around something so stupid in a matter of days.

if this does in fact come into play, I foresee a drastic rise in the # of ppl stealing cable, not b/c they cant afford it, but b/c the black boxes would likely remove this "feature".

EDIT: Oh yeah, also wanted to say that 1) this is the dumbest idea EVAR and 2) tech like this would get hacked in a matter of days upon release.

Sony and now Philips. Damn, someone needs to go talk to these guys, and by talk I mean the kind that involves Chuck Norris...

*flash to a year in the future*

Philips moves away from the TV buisness as sales slump to an all time low since their new technology was introduced into TV's.

All your eye are belong to us.

Love,
Phillips :buddies:

Wasn't a big feature on a TV a few years ago the fact that you could have a setting that would help you avoid commercials?

Let me sum this up plagiarizing everybody else's words- this is the stupidest idea ever.

And it will never happen, or Philips will, quite possibly, explode

"Philips' patent acknowledges that this may be "greatly resented by viewers"

wow.........just wow.........the stupidity leaves me speachless. Resented is an understatement.

"The patent also suggests that the system could offer viewers the chance to pay a fee interactively to go back to skipping adverts."

Um....yah......................................... .no!

I'm really tempted to call them and very seriously ask them if they are f***ing retarded.

"Hi this is Sam. How can I help you?"
"Hi Sam, I was wondering if Philips is f**king retarded?"
" *Silence* "

heres the point where I am starting to get pro pirating/hacker.

the more crap they break and hack and crack the easier my life is.
they will put this crap on TV, some hacker or something will break it, then my life will be good again.

this is the kinda crap that just makes me advocate the anti-corperate crap on everything.

2 things.

1. This makes my brain hurt so much that not even heavy amounts of narcotics could stop the pain.
2. Whomever at Phillips who came up with this idea needs to be banished to antartica wearing nothing but rotten fish.

I'm so p***ed I can't even think what to say. What's next? Clips on your eyes ala Clockwork Orange so you can't move the sight from the screen?

here's another problem

what happens when you are channel surfing, and you stumble upon a commercial, will it make you stop right then and there and force you to watch?

LOL now that would be annoying...
I can see that the whole worlds trash year 2010 consist 95% of Philips Tv systems.

You all hate it because none of you have ever paid for advertisements. I bet any business man here who has put ads on TV would like the idea.

If I paid 20k for an ad you bet your ass I want people to watch it. Besides philips will get a lot of endorsement for this and eventually all TVs will adopt it.

Here is an idea put ads in a place where people will see them or make the ads something that people might want to watch..:stick:
Like the Front page of XS...

Yeah. Right :p:

Exactly how does one hack a TV :stick:

"Attach this DB25 cable here, download this program and flash the firmware. Then attach these 25 resistors". Right. I can just see single mothers jumping at the idea of this simple hack.

Maybe they shouldn't advertise that way then? Or pay that much money for it.. People have the freedom to watch what they want, I never watch commercials because I don't want to. I don't care if some businessman would like me to watch it.. and neither does anyone here

If this does become a reality, here's my take on how this will be gotten around(outside of physically modding the TV). Since this chip/device would be in the TV, someone will create a "swithcing" box that resides between the coax outlet and the TV itself. It would act as the actual receiver and somehow create multiple signals. Whenever a commercial came on on one channel and the DRM-like device within the TV disallowed channel changing, you would just flip over to a new signal through the switcher box, and continue on your merry way.

EDIT: For guys like us however, I do believe we would crack op ent eh TV and physcially remove whatever chip causes this nonsense from inside the TV. :)

It also keeps you from skipping commercials on your DVR. Sadly, this is the tech I could actually see happening. The idea of not being able to change the channel on live TV will never fly IMO. Not being able to skip commercials on your DVR I see as much more plausible, unfortunate, but plausible. But like others have said, I would have definitely use any hack out there to disable the feature.

Jeff
04-20-2006, 04:43 PM
My guess is the "hack" is going to be a built in code that disables this "feature" for troubleshooting purposes... kind of like the region free setting on all commercially available DVD players.

It will drive a lot of people away from TV. Not that there's much left that deserves to be seen, at least in Spain it's all garbage. I only watch the Simpsons (and the episodes are repeated to death, 2 each day...)
