3dmark2001 7900gt WR SOOOO close

Hey guys, I've been benching alot lately with my 7900gt. I'm going for the
3dmark2001 WR and I know I can get there, but I'm just now really getting into benching for WR so my tweaking knowledge on 2001 is kind of weak.

Here is my situation:

That is my current best run (had a 41502 but I had mess with cpu speeds so it wouldn't let me submit it) I am using a LOD tweak on nature only, (not that I believe in them, but the guy ahead of me is obviously using them, and I want the top score lol ;) )

this is what is confusing me, I beat him in EVERY test other than nautre, but even when I am running the LOD tweak in nature my best is still 492 fps, where his is 597 fps....HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!? am I missing something??

The other thing that is driving me nuts is I can run my x2 3800 at 3.17 through 3dmark, but his cpu must be AMD, cause it says he is using a DFI NF4 board, but it is only at 2.8ghz....

Is this guy cheating or are there "tweaks" that I am unaware of?? Here is my current setup if it is any help..

DFI SLI-DR
3800+ x2 @ 3.17
Mushkin Lvl II bh-5 @ high 260's (can't remember exactly and I am at work lol but I think it was like 267)
evga 7900 gt @ 726/930 running 2.18v to ram and 1.55 to GPU

Are you sure hes not running SLI?

Also are you running LOD at +3?

what LOD are you using? if you just put the slider at 15 and called it a day, that's probably it.

for example, i find, with my 6600gt, that a LOD bias of 3.6 works out for me, though someone else said 3.0 is optimal.

if you DID maticulously slave over finding the very best LOD bias, then it's a bugged score. he most likely didn't have better clocks than you, since your dragothic is higher.

instinct is telling me it's either he's found a better LOD than you, or it's bugged.

EDIT: ooh, forgot about SLI. i dunno how that affects the other tests, like dragothic. he's got a higher nature, but lower dragothic, was was always the 2nd most gpu intensive test of 3dmark2k1se

I think he is using 2 x 7900GT in SLI.

He has a AMD cpu. But I dont know if it's @2,8GHz. From looking at system tests
it's possible that it's at 2,8GHz.

Tweaks:
Realtime?
Correct order for running tests?
If you really want that extra points try with Windows 2000 and directx 8.1

yeah thats the LOD I am running...is there a way to tell if they are running SLI at the ORB? I didn't see one, but I'm kind of a noob @ the orb... Didn't really think about SLI, which I would thinks is prety obvious lol... I didn't think SLI helped much in 2001 tho? thanks for the help!

EDIT: I did LOD in registry with value 18 00 00 00 or something like that, which I believe equates to +3 if I remember right.... the only program I foudnd to change LOD was NVmax and the max it gave me was +3 lod.

Yeah I am running tests in the order I've read to do them in, and I re-ran Car chase Low to get my best...I guess I feel better if he is on SLI and I am on a single card lol....I've been benching like crazy for the last few days...arg..

You'll see that he has similar fps in nature.

If you have access to 2kpro, that would grab you a quick 1000 points.

win2k and directX 8.1 wil gain you about 800 to a 1000 over XP indeed.

Not really it gained me about 300 points over a fully tweaked win xp dx9 install :(

Since his nature is almost 600 and you crush him in system tests, it has to be SLI. SLI kills system tests ;)

ok thanks, I'm gonna try to beat it with a single card today. I should be able to get there, my system has a little room left, but I was pushing to far to try and beat his score the other day, and it froze, so I called it quits....

My friend is getting the same evga as I got, and will be moding it for him, and he said I could do some benching with it :) its no 7900 GTX or X1900....but I'm a poor overclocker lol... I just hope his clocks as well as mine does....

@DStealth I know what you mean.... I play oblivion alot, and it is BEGGING for 2gb of ram....but I just...can't give up....my LVLII bh-5's....I love this ram! if you can get a hold of some, I'd love the competiton ;) I'm working on a Phase unit for dual GPU's right now....once that's done it's going on my 7900 for sure :)

Ok guys I just made it..... Cut down a few services and stuff, and for some reason I was just getting better scores...I was actually at lower speeds, (wonder if the gt was throttling down?) here is the run:

just beat the guy...so I guess (for a day or two till someone here sees this and blows me out of the water lol) I have the 7900 gt WR!!! YAY!!!! I'm going for 42000 soon...and the other 3dmarks aswell....but I really need SLI for those... Thanks for the help guys, I'll be posting more results soon

yeah I saw that, 2ghz on the ram is crazy man, i've got my ram vmodded and over 930 is a pain...it may need a little more juice :) What mods did you do to your card? i've only done Vgpu and Vram...nice work tho with 38k, also I am running the LOD tweak on Nature so that is helping the score a bit other wise it'd probably be mid 39k...

And from my expieriance Oblivion aint much faster using 2gb. Seems very gfx card limited for me. My 7800Gt aint fast enough with the gras settings set to max.

Well don't worry I won't be able to catch you as I have no LL mem haha, my X2 can do 3Ghz but it is too hot in Georgia for that.

I have only done the vgpu mod to my card. the vmem is stock. :stick: :eek: I just got lucky somehow.

Well.....all good things come to an end right?

I had everything going for a good bench tonight. Re-did the vgpu mod. 1.5v was going fine I tested it. Had no more issues @ 720Mhz in canyon flight like before. Powered down and did the vmem mod. Many said that after the vmem mod the mosfets got very hot so I sinnked them with ceramique. Got back into windows started 06, set the clocks @ 720/2050 to start. It was all going very very well...

.... until middle of the second test with the two lights and the trees. I had my case open and it faces me. I started to smell a VERY strong burning smell and the screen went completely ape :banana::banana::banana::banana:. Instantly I thought "Oh :banana::banana::banana::banana:." well a split second after that the mosfet that I sinked had a lil flame going under it. ROFL. I clicked off the computer about a second after that.

Needless to say the card is dead as a doornail.

It sucks and I am really bummed but :banana::banana::banana::banana: like this happens when you run things 600Mhz past their rated spec with +0.2V

Would have been an amazing run too. Oh well. I have a nice paper weight now and a lil story.

I think I will undo my vmem mod soon then....:( I know it really blows when things like this happen...had it happen a few times, killed a 6800gt 2 mobos and an AXP (back in the day lol) so I feel ur pain man....wish there was something I could do...:(

Hmm the WR isn't nearly as high as i thought it would be. I scored over 38K without tweaks or special drivers, with everything watercooled, 2gb kit of ram, and no Vmods on the card.

Get a DICED Opty 148 @ 3.5 Ghz and you'll see a score apart from the rest ;)

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Smelling smoke always stress the heck out of me. Seeing flame must have felt terrible.

@ Absolute, yes you are right, this isn't an amazing score. It just the best I could do with what I had..., I am almost done with a second phase unit for 2 video cards, and my friend is getting a 7900 gt and he said we could bench it so scores should go up :) I wish I had a bit better cooling, I can't run much more than 1.65v to my cpu, and where its at now it start going positive on my phase...I need better gasses but no moneys...Or a Dice pot but again I'm gonna have to wait a little while...don't worry tho scores will go up. too bad I don't have a yonah...:(

@Pinto lmao! I didn't realize you were part of the XS community lol (hould have figured), your score was def. a pain to beat, and you are probably not running LOD tweaks either....it was fun tho and it took all my setup had... hopefully my friend will get his zalman and we can have some SLI competition :)...
