So is Catalyst 6.4 safe?

Hey!

Just received my Sapphire X1900XTX today and was wondering what Catalyst version to install.
Have read in these forums about many people having severe problems with this new 6.4 driver version.
So basically I am wondering is it safe or not? Should I install 6.4 or 6.3?
I'm a little confused, since if 6.4 was really bugged, why is it still on ATI's official drivers site?

I don't know of any "severe" problems. Actually the only issue I have with them is a corrupted load screen before going into Windows XP. It appears for seconds then goes away. My guess is its something the older drivers left behind.

Other than that, nothing but good to say about them.

Yeah my benchmark scores went us using them but I switched back just to be safe until they fix the issue.

Good, I guess I'll go for Cat 6.4. I don't mind issues while starting windows, as long as there are no problem pre and post starting windows. Will report back later tonight when I've got everything up and running and tested a little.

I personally haven't noticed nothing apart the crapped boot screen. But also I must admit my card was acting strange because no id newer OpenGL game opened. Doom3 and QuakeIV started and back to desktop. That with 6.3, 6.3 with Chuck patch, Omega6.3 and 6.4 :confused:

mursaat :: Already did bro, that's one of the threads I had read nasty things in. Anyway, thanks to your reply you reminded me of something. There is no chuck patch for 6.4, right? If there isn't, I'll probably go for 6.3 + chuck patch instead, since I really want HDR+AA in Oblivion. Thanks! :)

Got same bootscreen problems, GTA:SA wont start either, screen goes black after "nvidia" logo. Dont know if it's driver related, but i think so. Worked great before change to 6.4. :/

Well, delivery guy screwed up with the packages. I'll get right one tomorrow, so I got more time to decide driver. Sucks though, since I can't play newer games at acceptable settings currently (on a single GTX 256). Anyway, I'm quite sure I'll go for 6.3 + chuck. Better safe than sorry. Thanks all! :toast:

The Chunk patch is actually modified 6.3 drivers so you shouldn't beable to install it after 6.4's. I cleaned my drivers and all off before I installed it so its not just a "simple" patch its an actual driver release.

Cat 6.4 worst driver release ever for me. Ati Tool no longer works...It will not overclock at all, corrupting in BF2, Q4, COD2. I uninstalled themlike ususal, used Driver cleaner in safe mode, used registyr machanic on top of that. I even manually checked the directory and took 25 minutes out my day to check for ATI drives in registry and found none. I uninstall 6.4, use driver cleaner in safe mode then reinstall 6.3 in xp, reboot and no more problems.

Yes, thats one problem i had when I went with my X1900XTX, from Nvidia 7900GTX... I really hated it...

Same here corrupted screen on boot.. other.. i don't know something is strange with the 2D/3D clock switch.. i m not sure.. but it seems sometimes the switch is not do.. ..
