View Full Version : How to tell if HDR+AA is working in Oblivion?

Well i got my x1900xt, installed it along with the Cat 6.3's and Chuck patch. Oblivion wouldn't let me turn both AA and HDR on, so I exited game and set AA manually in CCP to 2x. Re-ran game, I cannot tell the diffrence, but i have no clue as to what i'm looking for.

By forcing 2x AA in CCP does this mean it is working or how do I tell? I get 60fps inside (vsync is on, 60hertz, need to fix that aswell) and roughly 20-30 outside.

I can post a SS later when I get home (9:30EST) if that helps.

Drop the res to 640x480, or 800x600 and check text. That should be as apparent as anywhere else.

Well i read somewhere that Catalyst AI had to be turned on? I set it to advanced.

I also noticed when i checked the AA before I started the game it was back to let application decide, so i changed it agian. Played for a few minutes and checked CCP again. Seems fine now, all my settings are the same as before i played the game.

Who knows...?

If you can't tell do you really need it? I can't see pixels when I run my monitor at its max resolution of 20x15. I never use AA for that reason.

Do i need it.. no, but whats the fun in having all this hardware if I can't turn everything on? :p:

Well in my own experience 2x AA isn`t that much noticable even on 1280x1024. You need to turn 4x AA but that surely decreses performance alot.

btw for that 60fps thing get yourself RefreshLock app. It`s universal for any grafic card

As craig said, if you can't notice it, disable it and enjoy the extra FPS.

If you read the tweakguides guide about oblivion it says to disable Catalyst A.I. because it can make some washed textures. That has nothing to do with AA or HDR, only with Texture Quality.

And even if you use a LCD, you should use the 75hz option for gaming and 24/7. It is "unoticeable" but after long periods your eyes will thank you :)

Certain LCD's cannot run that and you will experience intermittent blackouts and possibly destroy the panel :( HP LCD's are a prime example.

BTW LCD's don't have a refresh rate like CRT's do. An LCD showing 60Hz will look identical to a screen showing 75Hz as there is no flicker.

I just beat the main quest line of Oblivion.. smacked up Mahrunes Dagon myself, although martin smacks him up even more.
I need to progress my character more instead of having Journeymen traits, time to get crackin on the theives guild quests. :)

I cranked it up to 4x AA and yes it does look better now.

The only reason I was running 60hertz was b/c my monitor supports 1600x1200 at 60hertz... althou now i have an option for 75hertz. Weird i never had that option w/my x800gto2.

I was running 60hz in my LCD, and when I turned on 75hz my railgun accuracy in Quake 3 was much better. Really smoother. And I thought it was lack of practice, it was the LCD :slapass: :D :D

It's like the old debate. To say the eye can't see more than 24FPS is wrong. The eye can't separate two different images more than 24 times a second. But that doesn't mean the brain doesn't notice more fluidness for having more and more FPS. And in a world with FPS, hz, DPIs, etc. it's sure more is better :)

You may have no flicker like in a CRT, but the image is more smooth with 75hz. Try it if you can and you'll notice it (at least in games capable of >=75FPS)
