that picture kinda reminds me of the beginning of half life 2. Maybe someday we'll see half life 3 or 4 looking that good

Wow, so amazing. It also reminds me of Half-Life 2, which also got me thinking, why isn't this guy working for a game company creating photorealistic textures and scenery?

he said 11 months and almsot 2000 hours to make that. that equates to about 6 horus a day. hes making enuff to sit on a pc and make that picture, hes not worried about a job

i woudlnt be surpised if he was handi capped of soem sort and near bed ridden and this was his work. met too many genius' in that state.

QFT, even though I can appreciate the work that went into that. Imagine what could come if he/she focussed that energy into a 3d scene.

This person would make a great background matte artist. Even though I'm an animator, I'd love to see bg matte's make a come back.

That is absolutely amazing, very impressive work. Photo-realism for sure. I can only imagine a future where todays equivalent of Half Life 2 looked like this. I love advancement in the aspect of technological related visuals, it's so intriguing.

People always :banana::banana::banana::banana: about how the gameplay of newer games is so boring and how there is nothing to motivate them to buy new titles. I keep buying new games for the very reason you just described - I'm amazed at the evolution of the engines, the graphics, the physics.

The reason games don't look like this is not a lack of software or lack of talented artists like this...it's the hardware...i'm sure valve could have made HL2 look like this... but you'd need a serious cluster to run it.

That's sooo much work that could have just been done with a camera or modeling prog. Fantastic use of medium.

Why not invest the energy in creating an image of something that doesnt exist?

This could have been captured by camera!

This is as IMPRESSIVE as it is IMPOSSIBLE TO UNDERSTAND.

EDIT: He is for real!

The incredible challenge of recreating reality is my motivation."

bg mattes are still heavily used in the movie industriy, of course no matte painter is insane enough (or have the time) to hand draw every single object of the image.

Why? lol...

It's utterly amazing, but unless he got a lot out if it, seems wasted.

hhmmm, this level of detail would not do good in a game, the picture alone he claims 1.7gb :O maybe if the size was a lil smaller ... eh, i don't know anything about photo-choppin' though .... so don't mind me

ugp
06-08-2006, 09:56 AM
With all the layers and detail it could very well be that big of a picture...

Look at the image size though as well. Does not surprise me at all.

06-29-2006, 01:54 PM
That's amazing. Although you can see its not quite realistic when it comes to the building and the track... But still its amazing how much time he spent on it and well I hope that was the result he was hoping to get. :P

lol. oh dear. someone /please/ get this guy something else to do with his free time. we should all email trying to convince him to take up overclocking, it might help ease the absolute battering he's giving his rig lol.

@ i||uSi0n^, this guy obviously has such command over his tools and mastery of his craft that i'm absolutely certain that that's the result he was hoping for. if that image were any more realistic i'd simply refuse to believe its not a photograph. Like the shelter area in the foreground on the left-hand platform is just absolutely spot-on.

lol funny quote:

"As a photo-realist painter, I have often been asked why I don’t just take a photograph. Good question, when you consider my paintings look like photographs. Well, for one thing, I’m not a photographer."

after getting into 3D pretty recently but not really being able to do anything with photoshop yet, and since i just got paid yesterday, im buying pretty much all of this sic bastard's tuts lol. might as well learn from the best.

that was the 'cheap deal' going on. there are ones that sell for $3000.
Bert monroy has been around for years, I think he designed the icons for the original mac? maybe I'm mixed up, but it says on the site that he's been 'playing around' with computer graphics for 20+ years. he is a majior contributor to the whole computer art scene.
