View Full Version : 7900gt overclocking problem.

I am in the process of finding the max for my new eVGA 7900gt. It is the vanilla variety with stock clocks of 450/1350. I have found the memory to be stable up to 1600 (haven't tried higher yet), and the core to around 530.
my question is this. If I go any higher on the core than 530, I get lockups in benchmarking. Now I have owned numerous video cards, and overclocked them all, but never seen one just lock the system up, or freeze the screen like this. Is this due to the overclock of the core or is something else going on.
I know that my cpu and ram are stable at the frequencies and volts I am running.
thanks

Apply a higher voltage to your GPU, or be happy with the 18% increase that you have achieved, but stop wondering what happens when you are crossing a critical border.
Even if somebody could tell you, it wouldn't help in any way.

Its strange that you answer my question with such a smartass tone. The purpose for this site is to post questions about various problems, sucesses, and anything else related to xtreme systems so that the community can help or enjoy with you. When I posted this, I expected a polite reply from numerous people who possibly have encountered similar situations and either worked through it, or found a solution. What I didn't expect was a reply from someone giving me an order to stop pushing my hardware past its "critical border" and the statement that "Even if somebody could tell you, it wouldn't help in any way".
This is xtreme systems. Not "don't push your hardware past it's critical border" systems. I appreciate you reading my post, but with the time it took you to calculate that I have gained an 18% increase from stock, you could have thought of something helpful to add.
But, If that 's all you got, please get off my thread.
thanks kindly

What are you using to oc the 7900gt? Honestly, I havent recieved my gt yet but its coming. I have oc'd extensively with a 7800gtx, however, and I need to know this, has the card artifacted at all before it locks up? When the cores are pushed to levels that they need more volts for or lower temps for they artifact before they lock up always in my experience. Still, 530 is a nice core clock considering that the gt cores are binned and the ones able to handle 550 are siphoned off into the Superclocked versions. Two things I would try,
1.) Try to improve cooling see if that does anything
2.) Try the 1.3v vmod and see how you do
PS. If you arent already using powerstrip I would advise you do as it is a much better program to use than coolbits.
PPS. Dont be so harsh with t024484 he has done a lot of work helping out the community figuring out the vmods for these cards. I think he has earned a few grumpy posts lol.

cool, thanks madgravity34. I am in fact using coolbits, but I will give powerstrip a try.
No the card doesn't artifact at all, that is what is so strange to me.
I am going to get better cooling soon, so I can do a voltmod, then the real clocks will come out for this card.
yea, I might of been a bit harsh, I just don't really take well to condescending posts.

well, the powerstrip program definately helps overclock better than coolbits.
Now I'm at 570core and 1700memory. This is a nice card for the vanilla model. I think it will do very well with the vmod.
thanks again Madgravity34

Sure anytime man. Your making me jealous cause I cant wait for my card lol. Hopefully it does some serious clocks since it defaults at 550/1580

I am glad its working out for you man. Would you mind doing me a favor though? Can you tell me what your ram IC's have written on them? Also, is 1700 the max you can hit on your ram without vmods?

if I push my 7900 to far it just freezez in 3d.. no warning/artifacting it just freezez, or it just straight bsod's..

i hope rivatuner will support 7900gt soon!i like it best then all other programs.. anyone knows why coolnbits limits my ram to 800?? there are ways to raise it from coolbits?

I find AtiTool Beta (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Video-Tweak/ATITool.shtml) serves pretty well...and minimizes to a temp display which is handy.

Also for all of you, try increasing pci-e clocks if lock-ups occur. That could be another limiting factor. Try 110 - 115mhz.

Fullup, you are completely misreading my answer. Although in telegram style, it was polite and it was a very practical advise what to do.
It was probably the telegram style that disturbed you.
I couldn't agree more that this forum is to find the limit and to try to push it even further, and I will support this as much as I can.
Madgravity, thank your for your friendly support.

all is good t024484. I was probably Just pms'ing. the reason I like hanging out in here is because everyone is so cool. Even when someone rubs someone else the wrong way, they are usually quick to mend the situation.
No harm done here.
and Madgravity34, I haven't reached the ram's max yet, will push it more tonight when I get home....and I'll let you know what kind of ram it is.
later
