i am going to switch to a pentium M setup, because of the cheapness to performance ratio, and the fact that i dont game much, but rather use apps like tv tuner, and word and stuff for school.
what dothan is the best to get. i read in the stickies that the 7x0 series clock better, are there any in particular that i should look for?
ive heard the Aopen 479 specific boards are JUNK. is this true? they are quite pricey too, and a p4p800-se w/adapter seems like a better way to go. if thats the case, can someone reccomend me some good DDR ram. i will be needing to sell my ddr2 first, its a shame that aopen board is no good for overclocking.
i will be using a 'ghetto rigged' apogee waterblock(i will make it fit on there!) do i need an IHS? if so, how do i put one on there? i have a chip im willing to cut it off of since it probably doesnt even work, but do i glue it on there and what do i put between the IHS and core? can i attatch the waterblock to the core? how tight do i tighten it?

i have read every stick, and searched for results as well. i have spent well over 4 hours looking at information, and i either missed some of it or i want a reply to MY question.

"Sonoma Dothans (with 533FSB, name: 7x0) clocks radically better than the old Dothans with 400FSB (7x5)"
"P4P800SE
- Vcore -> 1.6
- DDR voltage upto 2.85
- AGP -> 1.8v
- OCZ Booster works, 3.6vdimm
- If booted at 200+ FSB ratios 266, 333, 400, 500 become available
- Vcore and multipliers available in beta bios 1009.003"
straight out of the very first sticky in the intel section....
you dont need wcing for dothans, they run very cool

im not looking for that type of information. do we really NEED anything in life? besides water and food... i have a watercooling setup, and i want to use it. my entire case is custom cut to house it. there is no way i could sell it because its cut up. if you even read my question, no where did i question the fsb/speeds/compatibility with asus boards.
what is it with the recent influx of amd people into the intel section? IL+1

dude thats not a very nice way to treat someone...
besides, that info is in the stickies or in the relevant forum sections (b/w forums, w/c forums) :stick:
i dont think many are willing to cater for those who cannot seek

i dont think you would need an IHS on the dothan... unless your planning on changing the cooler often..
and in regards to how to mount the cooler, most people have to find an improvised way of mounting them, unless they use some zalman coolers, which can bolt straight on..
its a bit hard because iirc, the ct-479 blocks 1 or 2 of the mounting holes, so you cant just get longer bolts for your waterblock... and gluing the block to the cpu means you cant take out the cpu without pulling off the block either

yes, the ct-479 blocks two of the mounting holes. i was really looking for a step by step guide to removing/mounting an IHS. from what i read, it is a safer bet to just run the doth with an IHS.

For the dothan chips there isn't a single chip that is the 'best', the 740 through to 780 are your best bet (depending on budget) but if you have a lot to spend then there are a few 780ES (engineering sample) goin on ebay. When buying these chips you are going to get good and bad chips, some 740's will hit 2800 on 1.5v with the stock CT479 cooler and some wont go over 2650, it really is luck of the draw.
For ram, if you want a good overclock get yourself some nice PC4000 RAM with tight timings (Mushkin, Corsair, Geil etc ...) because that high speed ram really makes the dothans perform well, get your fsb on the dothan to around 260 and you'll be laughing.
Your custom watercooling setup sounds like a good bet for the dothan, I just went from a Zalman 7700Alcu to water and i'm very happy with the results, I'm getting around 100mhz extra but more importantly I can hit 270fsb now (could only hit 240 before) at 31 idle / 40 load and my rig is literally silent. The nice thing about putting a dothan on water is that the fans barely have to move as these babies don't give out much heat, you could also consider passive cooling with your WCing setup if you dont heavily overclock the dothan! :woot:
If you're looking for a good board to get then go for the P4C800-E with the CT479, it has some nice features and is very stable - you may want to do Vdroop / Vcore mods to the board & ct-479 if you're looking for really high overclocks - Here (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=82191) and Here (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26412)
For attaching your WB to the dothan I would advise making a shim (I used a blockbuster video card and it works a charm, the card is the same height as the core ... yes yes it is ghetto but it works) and then put some artic silver on for thermal conductivity, the IHS route is far better but has an increased chance of ruining the chip if you dont make a good contact with the core and IHS.
Hope that helps
EDIT - I will add an example of my WB mount when I'm back from work but here are a few I found

I have taken these pictures from threads here at XS of guys who used WCing with their dothan, if anyone does mind me using these pictures in this post then I will take them down

lots of stuff
wow, that did. is the board you mentioned better then the p4p800se? i dont know if im comfortable with soldering on such tiny surfaces, i ruined a PS2 trying to put in a mod chip. i havea 2.4ghz P4 mobile chip with IHS i can take off. i guess i could try mounting it without one first. just going to have to play with it i guess. 2.9 or 3.0ghz would be nice to see. i just bought a 740 off ebay too.

heh I just added some WCing pictures too - I think the P4C is better than the P4P as it can reach higher FSB's but the P4P doesnt have the vdroop problem (vcore can sometimes drop causing instability). Saying that, I have my 750 at 2688mhz (268 x 10) with 1.55 vcore and no mods to the board and it is solid as a rock, I'm getting 27.828 in Pi 1M so I'm very happy. My 750 is a bit crap but I cant be arsed to change it as I am waiting for Yonah/Conroe, you may find that your 740 can hit 2.8 easy, a lot do, again it's pick of the draw.
Concerning soldering, I would ONLY recommend doing board mods if you are very good with soldering. For the IHS you could try taking it off of your p4 but before you do that you need a p4 / celeron to to flash the motherboards bios so that it can take the ct-479 adaptor first so keep it, IMO I wouldn't bother with the IHS, the shim is good and I am very scared of the dothan cores because they are SO SO fragile and have seen a lot of IHS mods go wrong.
