Okay I have been following the threads very closely because I am building my dream rig in June-August.

But I have recently become interested in the NEW Intel products because they're supposed to kick-ass! Now my question is: Can somebody please explain the new round of Intel products?

Like I know Conroe is the new desktop CPU, but I believe that is just the Core name. What is the official name of the CPU then?... Same thing with Yonah, I know that is just Core-Duo, but why are people excited about it??!?! It's already out... And then there is Merom, Mobile-Conroe.

Another little thing... Supposedably nobody really knows the specs of the XE, What's up with that, is it gonna be the best ()? Finally will I know I am going to be an Early Adopter of Conroe, but does that mean fresh mobos (ick) or will our current 775 boards work?

I really appreciate the help. With so much information like this, I start to get confused. So will you guys just simply clear it up for me real quick :D.

"Core" == architecture name.

Yonah == Core Duo == early spinoff of that architcture, not really Core but very similar, just fewer internal units and less width in some units.

Merom == mobile implementation of Core.

Conroe == desktop implementation of Core.

Woodcrest == server implementation of Core.

Core - brand name such as pentium, opteron etc.
Core Solo - single core edition
Core Duo - dual core edition
Yonah - a core for the new Core Solo and Core Duo processors
Conroe - new single and dual core desktop cpu, with 2mb total cache and 4mb total cache revisions *hence sp1m performance*
Merom - mobile edition of conroe, AFAIK with onl 2*1mb caches?

correct me if im off.

Conroe is the desktop CPU, it may be called Intel Core, it will be sold as under the E6x00 model # system.

Yonah is basically a dual core dothan (pentium m) with some tweaks. The future Conroe and Merom are similar to dothan so it is a very good performance indicator of what is to come. Yonah is 32 bit. It is sold under Core Duo.

Merom is Yonah's successor, it is 64-bit and supposedly has a ~20% performane increase. It is a mobile-conroe. I would assume it would be sold as Core Duo as well.

It looks like Conroe is going to be introduced in 2 phases, with the mid range coming first (in Q3). We would have 2.66 as the highest speed at release. It is rumored that a 2.93 and 3.33 (XE@1333FSB) will be released in Q4.

The motherboard support is the unknown area about Conroe. You will need a 975x or newer motherboard to support it, it is unknown whether nvidias chipsets will support it. There are alot of 975X motherboards out now, we just don't know which ones are already capable of supporting Conroe. Some may need to go through a new revision (mainly needing a new VRM and some new caps)

I hope that answers your questions.

its not 2 times 2mb or 2 times 1 mb. every core cpu shares the cache its not two seperate caches like amd.

So let me get this straight... Intel is ditching the "Pentium" name for "Core", "Core Solo" (Single Core) and "Core Duo" (Dual Core).

'Yonah' was just something to get the "Core" name out and will be dropped soon. So nothing to get happy about there.

'Conroe' and 'Merom' are the finalized versions of this brand new stuff that 'Yonah' gave us a glimpse of. 'Conroe' will be the Desktop CPU (ie. Pentium) and 'Merom' will replace 'Yonah' and be the Laptop CPU (ie. Pentium M). Then finally 'Woodcrest' is the replacement for 'Xeon' which will be used for Servers.

Did I get this all right? If I did, what socket will 'Woodcrest' be just so I know?

Woodcrest is the codename, we don't know if it will be sold under the Xeon name, I would assume it will.

It is on Intel's newly introduced LGA 771 (not LGA775) socket.

and yes, you got it all right, good job.

Okay cool, thanks a bunch. So just to end this, "Conroe" and stuff are the actual physical core names like Venice and stuff.

But yeah, thanks for your help guys, superly appreciated, this just makes me more excited!!!!:woot:!!!

Also, is AMD sticking with their current naming system (XXXX+ and FX-XX?). Cause Intel is using a funky naming system now too (E6600 etc) for these new chips.

Then Kentsfield the replacement for Conroe EE

Kentsfield is a QUAD CORE with also 1333FSB, Its said to be released Q1 2007
So its just arround the corner :) Kentsfield will also just drop in on the Conroe EE boards.

Thats why I will be getting the 985chipset motherboard with a Conroe EE then upgrade later or just go straight to Quad Core, Have to look at performance first.

Ive read this awhile ago so if anyone has any new info plz. Ur welcome to add or correct me.:)

Yup Kentsfield is looking good too, I havn't read that it will just drop right in though, that is new to me. That would be very very cool, but knowing Intel.....I doubt it will :)

Merom will have 4MB L2 just like conroe (and a 2MB L2 version for the cheaper parts)

Conroe and Meron - will they have the same core? Does it mean that they will have the same performance (if they would have same cach&FSB)?

It is my understanding that Conroe and Merom will have the same core and thus the same performance all else equal. Merom will not be used only for the mobile sector but also for SFF and Intels other pc in the living room stuff. It is my guess that Merom will be binned low voltage “conroes” with maybe some additional power saving features enabled.

i have a ques, well, need some of u guys opinion basically...

i do plan to get a yonah notebook somewhere in june....but would it be advisable to wait for Merom instead? i know Merom debuts in September, but most likely will hit retail markets somewhere in Novemeber?

like the current yonah core duo, debuted in January, somewhere in Feb/march only did it full retail notebooks...

so juz wondering, whether is it worth the wait, june to november? really cant decide. I know from current notebooks with yonah, i can upgrade to merom without changing the notebook itself, but i dont think it is widely practiced in where i come from...so i rather choose the right time to buy the notebook itself...

thanx for ur opinions in advance!

Than can be that the merom will be s479 such as yonah?

Yonah and Merom will use the same 478 pin socket but it is not the same as the 478 pin Socket 479 that the Pentium-M uses.

Confused yet? :)

little bit :)
so i know all have only 478 pin but the name is the same, socket 479.. but i'm happy now, merom will be working in my aopen  thx

yeah...same core, same performance (all things being equal)

is it worth it to buy a core duo now, and updgrade to a merom cpu this summer, or would you wait until summer completely? will merom ship with a new chipset?

When are these chips comming out?:

Ridgefield, dual-core, 45 nm shrink of Conroe, with 6 MB L2
Yorkfield, eight-core MCM, 45 nm, 12 MB L2, successor to Kentsfield

how stupid is to call the arch core.... I really dislike intels marketing tricks

it sounds stupid.. my core's core.... or the core of core...

almost as stupid as calling it processor, thats a nice one ...AMD should call their next chip proceossor :P

Ridgefield maybe late 2007 (toghether with Penryn - the successor of Merom), Yorkfield 2008.
