There isn't someone with connections on the forum that could get a group buy for whichever mb?????? There must be 20+ members who would get in on it. I sure would. I'm glad I just bought my Yonah as I sure feel for those who have been waiting weeks for a mb.

use the search. this has been discussed already.

at this point, going yonah isnt worth it because merom+conroe will be out soon

Won't the mb for Yonah work with merom? Conroe is a while yet. Using that logic, why buy any new hardware as the next thing is better and is coming out soon.

1: this has been discussed

2: $$/gains makes some things worth waiting for. it's only an extra few months and conroe motherboards will be more available, cheaper, and better suited to overclocking because it's supposed to be a desktop chip.

Still don't agree with you. This is XS, if that logic was used we would only have half the info we have now on hardware. Always waiting for cheaper does not appeal to me.

yeah, but this isn't xtremewaitingforum.org.

If it's better than the previous, we have to get it :toast:

How exactly? Some of the best overclockers I've had have been Pentium 4-M's....

you got that right.
altough a bit more difficult, but the result was indeed fantastic.

i was referring to the motherboards and not cpus. sure, mobile cpus tend to overclock better (dothan, xp-m, and celeron-m come to mind), but compare the "for mobile" motherboards to the "for desktop" boards, there's an even larger gap.

with both conroe and merom being the same chip on different sockets, i dont doubt that the conroe will overclock better. when i see merom at roughly the same clockspeeds as dothan, two cores, and a ton more cashe, i think it will overclock to similar levels, maybe a hair better. i'm thinking ~3-3.5ghz on air with added voltage, maybe up to around 5 for dice. what's interesting is that intel will release a 3.33ghz conroe, which is double that of the low end merom! these chips might even hit 4ghz on air as rumored, maybe 5.5 with extreme cooling.

the differences between merom and conroe are simple:
1: binning
2: socket

Using the xeons as refrence (LV xeons vrs midrange normal ones), sure, the meroms might have more ocing potential as far as binning goes, but we dont know yet wether a 2.66ghz conroe will really be binned higher or lower than a lower voltage mobile 2ghz chip. the clockspeeds are very different, whcih may or may not make up for the differences in stock voltage. as of now, we dont know yet, so lets move on.

2: socket: 775 was made to handle high clocked chips with very high bus speeds. s775 motherboards also tend to use better chipsets. they are available and well known, not to mention the fact that they are cheap.

with the socket comes the motherboard. we KNOW conroe will have awesome boards. with so many companies going for it, there will be some good boards. who is going for the s479 boards? ecs and aopen. when was the last time you saw either of them make even a decent overclocking board? sure, by specs they look great, but honestly, how well do you really expect them to overclock?

by the time conroe comes out, there should be boards on the shelves ready to support one out of the box. how can you say that for merom and yonah? we still dont have yonah boards and will probably have to wait a good month for them to actually hit retail, and some of them might not even do that (like the dfi i915 s479) simply because demand isnt high. prices of these boards will be insanely high because they arent large production runs(i mean, really, 350+ usd for an aopen motherboard...).

i know some of you can justify a large premium to get yonah running for a couple of months and then swap it out for merom, but for most of us at xs, it's worth waiting to get the better goods for significantly cheaper.

this is why i think waiting is a good idea

^^
Yonah boards are pin compatible with Merom which is essentially mobile conroe...

Ditto.

Its a good idea! But how will it work for those of us in England, not the States?

It looks like the AOpen boards are available in Germany & Norway but not in England (& I'm not sure in the States either) so if the price & delivery is good, count me in!

:welcome: Welcome to XS Graham where a little honey gets you better results then a lot vinegar.

If anyone has a link to anyone that ships international and has the boards, pm me.:)
