Well after 6 AMD CPUs clocking like crap and bugging I've had enough of it. I have a 4200+ ES but it can't even do 2.7 on air so hopes for DI are low. After I test that I'm going to sell everything off (4200+ ES, EXPERT, 2*256 bh5, 2*512 utt) and give intel a shot.
Questions:
955 vs 975 chipset. Is the "E" revision 975 based P5WD2 board worth the large price jump from the plain P5WD2 955 board?
Ram. Fatbody D9 still the way to go? Is this still D9? http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=83730
CPU. I'm going to go cedar mill since I can't afford to bench 3d at the moment and I run a dual core AMD for 24/7. I'm going to try to get ln2 so I'm going for the gold. Is a 661 a must for 6.4+ or could I get away with a lower model?

Well I'm going to be running a PCI video card so that's not important... Maybe my x800pro if a 6ghz cedar mill can do damage in 01.

It sure will.
Sorry I deleted the previous post, but I needed to redefine something.
My previous post:
Hopefully I won't get flamed but to me it's not worth the 975X over the 955X.
The major difference I see is that the 975X is an 8x8 while the 955X is a 16x4 which in terms the 975X is better for CrossFire but for overclocking, both can overclock sky-high.
**Edit**
That's exactly the same RAM that some fellow OCer is using, he got his 920 all the way upto 4.4ghz on a 1:1 ratio.
P.S. I hate daylight savings.

Welcome to the dark side. My recommendation is TWIN2x1024-8500 or TWIN2x1024-8000ul if you can find it, Mushin's REDLINE is also very good. 8000ul is Micron's D9s. No guarantees on OC for either CM or Presler. Have seen 631 outperform 661s easily. I had 4 930s, all over the place on OC capability. Luck of the draw. Also have 2 P5WD2-E boards, they suck, not worth the additional money. 1 maxes out @ 1540, the other barely hits 1600, stable.
EDIT: Wait 2 weeks, Presler and CM prices are due for a price cut

The 631 has made it to 6.7+ I'm sure with someone as experienced as you are with DI you could push it furthur....and there is always ln2.
I am in exactly the same boat as you are, but I am trying to get my laptop to hold me out until conroe/am2. It's tough. I miss my benching and dry ice :(

I've owned 8 socket 939 chips, I know how luck works ;) I want the 5400ul but I can't find a reliable affordable place to buy it. There's no way I'm paying 266 dollars for a gig of ram to run pi.

The 800mhz delta between their SS and 1m makes me want to cry :( I know Unseen has had amazing results with his 631 but with ln2 the FSB (almost typed htt there) will wall before the CPU.

I thought the only reason to choose the 975x over the 955x chipset is for Conroe support.

maybe you will be more satisfied with the fact that you have the latest model under the hood:D
so why not switching to 975?
cant be bad if you can afford it

Any update on your decision? I'm in the EXACT same situation atm. My SS does DICE temps and its really tough to find an AMD to run...
