View Full Version : Trying Intel for first time

I've never owned anything but AMD but decided to try a yonah. Having had 8 different dc AMD cpu's, I guess the real question for me is not how much faster(I know they are faster then current AMD) but how equal are the cores in strength? Every dc I've had was a really strong core and a weaker core that would drag it down. I have not seen (because I don't hang out here) any dual prime, dual spi with the little ss of yonah I've seen. Just single spi ss. No dual prime at all. Why???

I've got the ram and cpu and like most am waiting for a mb.

I'd be curious as well. Hopefully intel DCs won't suffer from the same "imbalanced core" syndrome that AMD has, where one core is stable 100 Mhz further than the other.

We dont know much about Yonah yet... i guess when everybody gets their boards we wll see the results (finally).

thunderstruck!

I must say, I can't understand why most users don't run dual instances of spi or prime95 while running dual core. It isn't hard to grasp. 2 cores = 2 instances. 3d doesn't count because it's different.:p:

This is funny. The first time I post a question in the Intel section, an AMD man gives the answer.

I hope this isn't a precursor of things to come.

i find it funny on how all the AMD fanboys dont know anything about intel, and the intel users know atleast a couple things on amd. cracks me up...

I said I bought one. If this section is only about fanboys, maybe I should not have. I thought I ask a question, do you have an answer? Can you get uncracked up and answer it?:slap: :stick:

I didn't come over here just to get the fanboy junk.:nono:

Are you the Intel user that knows stuff abut AMD but won't address the topic of this thread?

Um, I know alot about both ends and I've been tempted to go Intel in the past (like with the 900 series Dual Cores) but the fact that I can't buy 1 intel chip without having to buy a new motherboard (w00t w00t Intel and their sh0tty way of doing chipsets). I wanna buy a new processor, not a new processor and mobo.

OK, let's not turn this into a fanboy the other way either. This was just a simple question on why I haven't seen yonah dual spi or prime ss. I just want to know if the cores are pretty equal and the only way to know that is to do dual whatever.

I hope there are some Intel guys that are helpful. AMD guys, cool it.:D

The little I've tried dual Intel.. and as far as I've understood from others with dual core Intel's.. the "problem" with "unbalanced" cores is not AMD x2 specific..
I think alle dual core will have "unbalanced" core (oc-wise).. more or less "severe"..

the architecture doesnt really play a role in the clock speed differences afaik, so the process and quality of manufacturing are what do it. since these are similar between amd and intel, i would expect similar clock differences between the cores.

Thanks guys.

Do any dc Intel owners do dual benches or prime to find out how much weaker the one core is? I know this sounds like a first timers but that's because I am.
I know that in AMD dc if you post a ss of single spi everybody and their dog would be on you. Is that not the case with Intel?

I almost feel like the Intel guys don't want you to use AMD but don't like AMD guys who try Intel. :(

You know what, who cares what anyone thinks in that regard. Just run what you want and carry on ;)

BTW I'm usually running AMD and I never ran dual PI or anything else for that matter until I needed a solution for the cold bug :D

why dont you just shut up about who owns an intel chip and either use it or dont. THIS ISNT A WAY OF LIFE BUDDY, ITS A COMPUTER. jesus. did you come in here to just whine and moan? seriously, ask your questions. it doesnt matter who answers it. not everyone is online 24/7 and waiting to answer YOUR questions. maybe you should have stayed with amd so i wouldnt have to listen to you whine about no one answering your questions.

WTH man, show a little respect, he's asked a reasonable question, in a forum you discuss the question, not give people crap for owning AMD and posting in Intel... 2 posts now like this :stick:

he shouldnt have brought it up. if he wants to whine about the people that own intel, thats his problem and he needs to take it elsewhere.

I'm Glad most on XS are not like you. You just joined not even 2 months ago and your talking trash like this. You need to go back to the rude and crude forum you came from. If you can't contribute more then the garbage above, you shouldn't post.

thanks, you are always helpful. I'm sure it's going to take me a long time to figure it out once I get a mb.

Nice going Dumo.
I'm interested too in seeing if Intel has closer cores than AMD's chips. 4 out 4 x@ 3800+'s core-0 is far better than core-1. Been awhile since I've ran Intel yonah and conroe are calling me back to the dark side:)

Now I like Intel more because:
1. Most likely no coldbug at least till -100C and lower, much more fun playing at these temps
2. No need to spend time testing the best/stable memory subtimings
3. And now it ownz :D Dothan -> Yonah -> Conroe -> Merom -> etc
TDP much lower is very nice

dogsx i have seen a bench of a yonah dual superpi 1m @ 2.16g

I cant seem to find the thread (might not have been on forum), but it was 29sec when running one instance, and about 34sec running dual (i have been told this is due to sharing the cache, but i also dont know much about intel).

I hope that the intel fanboys like viper and ingentingmendeg dont reflect the bitterness of other intel users, after all, most are just striving for the best performance, helping each others on the way.

1. Yea coldbug sucks, cheap and easy fix via the BicMac copper coldpate stacking method though.

2. ??? From the benches I've seen both platforms dont' really gain much from using crazy OC'ing RAM/timings, someone did some tests a lil' while ago here and even with crazy timings vs. stock the performance increase was like 1%. I like OC'ing the A64 personally as there is no performance pentaly with using dividers, I hope this is true with Conroe as I never have any luck OC'in RAM...

3. Yup, new arch., can't wait to play with one. :) Unless you're running em' in a laptop or a rackmount with as many 1U servers as you can cram into it TDP don't mean much really, of course we all OC here so it becomes totally meaningless to us...
