not too bad TopGear57

I think the voltage problem might be a driver one

Are you sure u cant go higher with the core?

yeah i have tried going 637 on the core at that same voltage but have only had a couple times where it would pass 3dmark05 with that, i need to be able to give it more voltage but everytime i go above 1.2 volts it will always lock up in 3dmark no matter what i am at on the core even at stock, if its over 1.2v then it will lock up.

Anyway there seemed to have been a good amount of people with xl's who had the same problem as me with not being able to go more than around 1.2v give or take .05 without locking up, here is the thread.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=78054&page=46

None of them seemed to figure out exactly why that was the case other than maybe the cores were weaker and couldn't take the voltage. So i am hoping that it is somehow not a bad core and that its something i can fix, but i don't know. I am using the catalyst 6.3 drivers ever since i did pokey's bios flash technique which made it detectable as an xl i suppose, since before when i just force flashed the xl bios with winflash i was not able to install the 6.3's and when i installed the 6.4's it said gto in 3dmark. I will probably try out the 6.4's again or maybe wait for the 6.5's but i am not counting on them helping.

x1800gto will give you equal or better performance with smart shader3

If you get connect3d, u can flash to 16 pipes, and that will deffiently pwn the x800

You may be able to flash to 16 pipes if you're lucky. Don't purchase a GTO thinking 16 pipes is a sure thing.

As seen here.http://www.ocforums.com/showpost.php?p=4457429&postcount=49 A connect3d that is not unlockable.

Yeah, let me correct that.
As of 4-28-06 ALL (3 so far) CONNECT3D X1800 GTOs ARE UNLOCKABLE FROM www.MONARCHCOMPUTER.COM ($188 AR)

copy and pasted from ocworkbench post:

NEW FINDINGS!!

Ok, after finding out that some people got the DEVICE ID to change, and thus enable all the controls in ATI Tools, I thought I would give it a shot.

WARNING: This involves clearing your BIOS. There is good chance that you may not be able to recover your card from this if something goes wrong. Make sure you have a spare PCI video card or something for backup, in order to reflash.

I downloaded the empty bios from techpowerup.com and the sapphire xl bios from there as well. i wrote a batch file to flash the empty bios and then the sapphire bios from DOS using ATIFlash. Copy and paste the following lines to a new text file and then rename is as flash.bat or something:
atiflash -newbios -f -p 0 empty.bin
atiflash -newbios -f -p 0 sapxl.bin

save atiflash, the empty.bin and the sapphire bios to your boot disc. rename the sapphire bios to sapxl.bin (unless you like using the "~1" in the file name -- edit the .bat accordingly, of course). reboot to DOS using your disc, cross your fingers, and run the .bat file.

ATIFlash 3.09 (http://www.techpowerup.com/bios/bios/atiflash309.zip)
Empty.bin to clear bios (http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/100/images/empty.bin)
Sapphire X1800 XL bios (http://www.techpowerup.com/bios/Sapphire.X1800XL.256.Samsung14_050923.bin)
Thanks to Techpowerup.com for providing the bios images and the tools!
http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/7023/deviceid5cf.jpg

now, ATITool recognizes the sensor chip and is able to change the voltages. I will play with it more soon..

question:
wouldnt this render the card useless?

i mean, u just flashed it with xl bios, and its 1.4ns ram, while the gto is 2.0ns ram,

correct?

thats a great score for only 12 pipes, it makes mine look like crap dangit, however i would think yours would still be a little higher with such high clocks.
what voltages were you running for those clocks? Were you running all those applications in the background when you did the test? Were you using the ati tray tools tweaks? What speed were you running on your cpu?

Hello all

I have a few questions and i hope you can help me.

I have a club3d card and the pipe select is 0x227e4 so it is not flashable to 16 pipes right? And what are the max with stock cooling for you?

I have flashed the bios like pokey006 said with the xl bios and newbios and then without newbios and it worked fine. :)

Now i can push the voltage a little but what should be the max?

I have testet with ati tool and with stock voltage my pc crashed @ 598,5.
then i give 1,25v to the core and it goes up to 640.

But the temp of the voltage regulator is going up to 70* is this normal?

Core temp the same max 72 is this too hot?

And whats with the mem can i give it 1,95v 24/7 with stock cooling or is it to much the mem can go up to 630 with stockv.

And with 1,93 just 648 this is not much i think with 1,95 it can do 650 max :(

Sry for the bad english

Yes the XL is 1.4ns but they didn't make a new bios for the GTO with 2.0ns timings it has the same timings as the XL at 1.4 which is probably why I can clock so high in the ram.

First, you need to look into some aftermarket cooling but with stock cooling I wouldn't go more than 1.3 on the vcore and 1.95 on the mem. The heat from the core is what's holding you em back.

Its like the difference between 200Mhz fsb and 2225 for BH-5 ram or 3448 for high latency DDR500 (250Mhz).

Ive spotted a place selling the x1800xt for the same price as x1800gto, 625core 1500mem vs 500core 1000 mem and 12 pipes. Its still got 256Mb - I looked at some reviews and for the games I play atm mostly America's Army based on UT2004 engine; the speed was the same. Based on that Im still happy with my x800gto @16 pipes 550/550. When UT2007 comes out hopefully there will be a x1900gto. I heard some talk of this too: http://sg.vr-zone.com/?i=3577

X1800XT for $190?! Don't think so...

The X1900GT/GTO launch was delayed til August, to get rid of R520 cores.
Unfortunetly, the x1900GTO might be 256mb. All, in all, there won't be a segnificant performance increase between the 256mb x1800 and 256mb x1900.
I would not get a new video card (unless you are on x700/6600) til' mid 2007.
Since Vista will come with DirectX 10, and a whole new generation of cards to support it.

In the UK, that is and its £170 for either; which probably means the x1800gto is overpriced anyhow. I wouldnt pay £170 for a cut down previous gen part in any case though.:fact:

Connect3D x1800 GTO UNLOCKED

i think i have had success unlocking my connect3d x1800gto. i have tried to post my results at ocworkbench.com but there isn't much activity there relative to videocards. since you guys seem to be pretty interested, i thought i would let you know about my findings.

since my registration on this site hasn't gone through yet, i thought i could try PMing some of yall. i have posted the details in a gaming forum that i moderate, including a snapshot of the ATITool readout and the newly edited bios. it turns out that my original bios was exactly the same as pyr0's, so yall may have some luck.

As of my progress, I flashed my card with bnomes, then to 'enable temo control'
i did

atiflash -newbios -f -p 0 empty.bin
atiflash -newbios -f -p 0 s18xl.bin

however, when i try to glash it back to
atiflash -newbios -f -p 0 stokbios.bin
or
atiflash -f -p 0 stokbios.bin

i get no video at and after boot.

???????

Another thing, I can change the voltages with ati tool, but 1.075 and 1.3 does not make me gain 1mhz, and rivatruner doesnt see them changed

:help:

edit:

I GOT IT!!

TO enable voltage control
i used ati flash 309

atiflash -newbios -f -p 0 empty.bin
atiflash -newbios -f -p 0 s18xl.bin

then in windows, using ATIWinflash106
I flashed it back to the modified connect3d 16 pipe bios
and now i can change my volts :woot:

As my post above states, I was finalyl able to enable my temps (aim me: kohan69, I'lll help u personally if u need)

however, i ran into the 1.2v problem with the core as well:

yeah i have tried going 637 on the core at that same voltage but have only had a couple times where it would pass 3dmark05 with that, i need to be able to give it more voltage but everytime i go above 1.2 volts it will always lock up in 3dmark no matter what i am at on the core even at stock, if its over 1.2v then it will lock up.

Anyway there seemed to have been a good amount of people with xl's who had the same problem as me with not being able to go more than around 1.2v give or take .05 without locking up, here is the thread.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=78054&page=46

Currently, I'm abusing my mem:

700mhz @ 2.2v mem, i/o: 2.0v

Running on stock heatsink, with the fan 100% duty and another 20mm fan blowin at the voltage regulaotrs at full speed.

Will post some results soon (unless my card dies :p: )

update:
max mem clock at stock volts (1.9/1.9) is 684mhz, not too bad for stock cooling

Start artifacting at 693mhz ram, even at 2.2v/2.2v :( Seems that 700mhz mark was a stroke of luck
Possibly heat-related, although the top of the heatsink (my mobo is horizontal) is barely warm

update2:

Stable clocks for core and mem together:

http://img280.imageshack.us/img280/3050/x1800gto165506501cq.jpg

Something is very wrong with that score, I got higher with lesser clocks....

Use ati tool, ati overclocker sucks and loosens the timings of your ram

KoHaN69
05-04-2006, 12:17 PM
Loosening the timings kills the performance in most games, afaik
I'll try CCC later with the 6.4gtos

I really wish I could do more than 1.11v on the core, sometimes 1.2 is ok, but most of the time it crashes in 3dmark, so im stuck under 570mhz >.<

Ati tool kept crashing the card, I got older version (beta 12 instead of beta 14)

Here are some results:

I may not need that high of voltage on the ram

I'm kinda lost on video cards, I don't wanna get something too expensive because that seems to me like throwing money out of the window, but I also want to run my games decently. I'll probably stick to a 7600GT, although I'd really like to get back to ATI, miss my 9800se@xt+. I was on a 6800GT, sold it, now I got a 6600GT... It's ok, but pretty weak =P

Thanks for the fast answer.

I'd stick with ATI
even if it doesnt unlock to 16pipes, the gto for $180 is much better than 7600gt for $160

Due to the fact that it's 256bit, and 7600 is 128bit memory bandwidth.

If you got good cooling, and are lucky the 7600 will make up for the bandwidtrh in MHz

But all in all, I'd go with a X1800, even at all stock, at 1280x1024 almost all games are at the highest settings.

What aftermarket cooling do you guys suggest for this card?

I can get 700Mhz on the core without a problem but my memory seems to be topping out at 650ish.

Breaking 9k in 05 wasn't too hard (even with my moderately clocked system).

The thing is, I live in Brazil, so if I want something from newegg, I have to import with someone, since I can't buy directly because I'd have to pay 60% tax over the price. And there's a 7600GT that I could buy herer that is much cheaper (would be like US$ 60,00 cheaper). 128-bits isn't really a problem since it has enormous memory clock, and I'll definetly have good cooling, I'm gonna adapt one of these:
http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/productimage/35-106-030-01.JPG

Hope to get a good clock. If the 16 pipes thing was guaranteed, I'd stick with the GTO, but I think my return to ATI will take a little longer hehe

hi all.

i had a powercolor 1800GTO which didnt mod either, but i hit 9000 in 3dmark05 with it at 685/700 clocks. but i got the chance to upgrade to a 1800XT for $100 canadian so i did heh..

all i can say is that even tho the GTO was powerful, it cant touch the XT's 512meg of ram which ingame does help ALOT.

i was one of those that said the diff between a 256meg and 512meg card was minimal but i now have to say i am very inpressed by the 1800XT which i also have stock with the saphire PE bios kicking it to 700/800 in 3D.

sits at about 68 degrees at that in my very full case ingame.

To me it doesnt look like u are using the correct files. It looks as if you are trying to flash 2 empty bios'?

I read the artical and file 1 was saphxl

OK guys i have got it, thanks to pokey006's help from another forum, i now have the exact method that should get all your voltage changing option working in ati tool. You can check in rivatuner when you increase your gpu voltage and it should now change as its supposed to.

Get atiflash 3.09 and put both files on a floppy
Next download sapphire xl bios from techpowerup.com and throw that on the floppy as well, i changed the name of my bios to a short name so it works easy in dos such as sapxl.bin
Next you can download Bgnomes modified bios from here if you have a card that unlocks to 16 pipes like mine.x1800GTO Modified Bios

If yours does not unlock to 16 then you can just use your default GTO bios for this step.

Anyway copy that bios to your floppy as well, i named mine gtomod.bin
And last thing you can make a flash.bat file by just making a new text document and inserting the lines exactly as shown here

atiflash -newbios -f -p 0 sapxl.bin
atiflash -f -p 0 gtomod.bin

after you put those 2 lines in the text file, save it and then rename it to flash.bat and of course throw that onto the floppy as well

You should now have 5 different files on the floppy, 2 bios's, 2 files from ati flash 3.09 and also the flash.bat file.

That's it now you can go boot to dos and run the flash.bat file and if all goes well you should have a x1800Gto thats able to change all voltages and show temps in AtiTool.

Thanks Goes to Pokey006 and Bgnomes for their help on Getting this all to work.

Last but not least Flash At Your Own Risk!

Have A Nice Day!

Ok, I didn't notice you had 16 pipes unlocked, insead of the stock bios flash with a GTO bios modded for 16 pipes with out the -newbios command line to retain the 16 pipes. The only thing you want is to be able to adjust the voltage, in ATiTool, which for some odd reason can't be done with just the XL bios. It has to be flashed to XL fully then back to GTO without -newbios to preserve the ROM settings of the GTO.

730/730 is common to GTO
i have seen few guys having mem almost up to 800mhz
but now one guy is talking about 900mhz..
well if one can do it then others should aswell!
ok, maybe not me but i havent seen any other dude with mem clock over 900mhz.
thats whats fishy about!

what bios, what timings, what voltages
even not all 1,2ns XT-s can do 900mhz for mem

But you will most likely get the connect3d that unlocks to 16 pipelines, and is at 560/700 than a card that stuck at 12, but does 700+/700+

Could someone (or a few peeps) throw up some 3DMark06 shots? I'd like to see the difference in the graphics score between something like a 12p 700/700 and a 16p XL-ish.

05 scores dont help when everyones got different CPUs, RAM, etc.

I'm on the fence with this card and I almost bought it from NewEgg when they had it for $174 AR

Get latest omega drivers

Underclock it, run 3dmark03 for 5 hours
do that for 3 days
then increase the clocks back up by 20mhz a day, and run 3dmark05 for 5 hours, everyday from then on, until ur back to ur overclock

The core is liek a car engine, but less predictable

Here is the link to the two bios file I used apparently it loosens the mem timings a little. One is Sappxl.bin that should be flashed first using the -newbios command line, the r520.bin without the -newbios command using atiflash3.09. Flash at your own risk, but be sure you're using something other than stock cooling, the trick to getting the mems that high is to get rid of some of the heat off the pcb. Also set votages in atitool to around 1.525 on vcore, and 2.054 on vdimm.

if upping our voltage doesn't help your overclock, you more than likely are not actually changing voltage, it was only after using the flash method pokey006 told me about that i was able to actually properly change the voltage on my card. I have the volt bug on my gpu of course, i can't go above 1.2 without lockups, but my 2ns memory overclocks fine, i have had it to 740 stable, it would probably even go higher if i wanted to up the voltage even more. My core because of the volt bug would only go to 634. Anyway i wrote a little tutorial about the flashing method at ocforums and someone posted it on here a couple pages back, and that would probably get your voltage to actually change for real.

I got a Sapphire. Flashing didn't help at all. It's not a bad XL, because I have BC20 memory. I change my voltages with Overclocker.exe with no problems. on 12 Pipes I reach 720 on the core and 700 on the ram. That's stable. It can go higher but then after half an hour or so of 3D gaming it goes back to factory settings. My Venice E6 3500+ is clocked at 2800Mhz. Altogether I get 30 frames with all eyecandy on in Oblivion. =))) W00T

edit: for anybody interested, that's 1.45V on GPU, 2.2V on GDDR3, and 1.6V on Venice. All aircooled, works like a charm.

I only have 1 120mm fan blowing from the left along the card so the voltagereg. wont go over 60 whithout the fan they go up too 75

My Saphire won't unlock using the sapxl bios posted.

I flashed the empty bios followed by the sapxl one.

12 pipes as usual.

At least I can change Vgpu and Vmem and already got to 620/610 with 1.2v Vgpu and 1.95v Vmem (3d Stable). But this is a hot card. I got 50ºC full load @ those clocks and vcore.

Room temp around 25º/27ºC. Card is watercooled with a MCW60 and a 120mm rad.

No benching because I can't get my cpu stable on the expert. I have an Optie 146 CABNE capable of 3ghz with 1.4v on a SLI-DR but on the expert I'm unable to get it stable over stock.

I have a crappy cpu though so 3dmark scores aren't that impressive.

I have a question!

Because one can obviously run masterless CrossFire with X1800GTO,
what is stopping our computers from running X1800XT´s or X1900XT´s
masterless?

Obviously, it would not be the perfect solution because of the
performance issues with masterless C/F, but it would be a fun setup to
bench and compare.

I know for a fact that one can run X1800XTs in masterless crossfire, because
I flashed it with my GTO´s bios, and then I could run crossfire. The issue is that my GTO (and XT) can both do around 720/800 with voltage, but I cant change voltage when I have them flashed with the "GTO" bios because AtiTool doesen´t reckognize the cards and allow voltage modifications.

So, is there a way to mod the drivers (the driver gurus here) so we can run masterless XT´s, or any other idea how one could enable voltage mods on the GTO´s so one can test the real performance :)

Fun thoughts ?

Solution: Open up your GTO bios with the new RaBiT2.0a and set voltages to 1.2125. Save the bios, then open the file again, you can then bring the voltages up another 10%. Keep doing this until you get to arround 1.45V and save it and flash it. The X1800GTO will now have 1.45v running to the core. This is the best I can do since I own a GTO. max clocks at 1.45 though are 700/700 for me. I can't figure out how to modify the memory voltages.

yeah, but that removes the ability to play with masterless CF =)

I am running both the GTO and the real XT I have in XL/XT mode
and it works great for voltages, but then I can´t use CrossFire.

Then I can flash to GTO bios (have to use -newbios, to reset the DevID strings) and play with masterless CrossFire, but then I cant change voltages.

I would like to play with voltages in a CF configuration :D. I know, I am needy :p

after doing 2 flahes I stated above (maybe use XT instead of XL bios) and using the 16 pipelines GTO bios for your XT, you will have an x1800xt that registers as a a x1800gto, with volts and CF

Hi all,
finaly i made it here, i have been following this post now a few days beacuse i have this :banana::banana::banana:y volt bug or what we should cal it. I was thinking that we should fix this problem. I have been testing every trick in the book about this, flshing with over 10 diff. bios and all the drivers that exsists on the net.
As i understand, if we flash bios with the XL trick we can change volt with ATItool and that works, when i rise the volt in ati tool i get higher volt on the board acording to my mulitmeter. So we do have more volt on the board, but it seems like its not getting all the way to the core ( or can the core be bad on some boards?) Can it be like something that holds it back? like a bigger, to big transistor? Im not good at this things at all.. have only done one vmod on 7600gt before. All you volt moders out there.. what are we gonna look for? what do you think? how can i get in touch with a volt moder who nows what he is doing? What do you other people with the same problem think about this "bug".

What's happening is that any increase of the voltage of the core causes instability. This is NOT due to heat or overclocking, even underclocked, any increase to the core causes instability

Just leaving this as a reference for others. Your mileage may vary but for me I had to use an earlier version of ATI Flash (3.09) to get 16 pipes AND voltage control fully working in ATI Tool.

Continuing with original post:

Hey guys, having some problems with my HIS X1800GTO which I got today. I followed the instructions given by pokey006 beginning with this post (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1416432#post1416432) and managed to enable 16 pipes, but I get no voltage adjustments with ATI Tool. Initially I wasn't 100% sure about what to do so I simply flashed to the Sapphire X1800XL BIOS which gave me 16 pipes and voltage options in ATI Tool but I soon realised that they weren't actually working (hit a wall at 540/580, no change in temps or voltage when monitored by RivaTuner). Then I followed those instructions to flash to X1800XL then back to modded GTO but ended up with no voltage options in ATI Tool, just 16 pipes. All flashing was done with ATI Flash 3.15 in DOS.

Would appreciate any help/suggestions. Thanks very much.

I have the HIS Excalibur X1800GTO ICEQ3.

Had it flashed to the Sapphire XL BIOS for a while now.. and everything runs sweet.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a182/ZZRiddick/d1e19d4c.jpg

Thats with 16 pipes, 2.7Ghz 3800+ AM2, Corsair PC5400 @ 900Mhz Cas 4,4,4,12. (as you can see  ), and X1800GTO @ 575Mhz Core, 1Ghz Memory.

I must admit, these card's are GREAT.. after downgrading from an X1900XT (flogged the X1900 whilst I could still get some decent cash for it).. this card performs very well.

Mind you, after the flash.. I cannot boost the memory past stock! (500Mhz)

But core can still hit 575 with ease.

The card never break's past 60oC at full load.

after modding my original x1800 iceQ bios with hxden and rabit 2.0, the pipes unlocked but the core would only go to 560 with artifacts and my memory would not overclock whatsoever, everything would lock up, even with increasing the voltages. after reading somewhere that rabit 2.0 reads the memory timings wrong, I ran the original bios through rabit 2.1, then edited it using hxden to unlock the pipes, loaded it up in winflash and now I am making some progress. I set the volts in ATI tool beta 15 to around 1.35/2.09/2.09 and set the fan to 100%, then I open rivatuner first for hardware monitoring, then overclocking. For quick stability checks I open ati tray tools for the 3d window and artifact checking. so far I'm up to 650/650 (i don't have much time to play) but I'm sure I can reach some of the speeds that other peopleare posting finally. oh, and the omega drivers helped too.

wow this thread is still alive :D
i remember it from the time i got my x1800gto a few months ago, its from Gecube...
currently i cant get much higher than 600/600 and it crashes... ill try raising a little more the voltage as its low by now, i use 100% stock cooling and a closed case so the temps get really high, volts are 1.15 gpu / 1.94 ram and mvddq...
ill post some 3dm05 results tomorrow :)

keep ur card at stock clock, and if it crashes by purely voltage increase, it's the voltbug.

Hey guys thought I would post this for anyone that cares. I just put some Artic Silver 5 on my HIS x1800gto IceQ3's memory, gpu, and voltage regulators. I'm happy to say that it help with temps and max overclock

Before:
gpu - 730mhz, 84c
mem - 730mhz
vreg - 83c

After:
gpu - 750mhz, 80c
mem - 790mhz
vreg - 77c

Now I don't run at those normally but I think the AS5 help out pretty well. My 3dmark05 went up by about 300 points and temps are lower.

Also, does anybody know how the HIS IceQ3 compares to a Zalman VF700 or VF900?
