View Full Version : Dothan/Yonah/Merom cross swapping tests

I do know that the chips are not pin compatable but I wanted to test the theory of interchanging to see if any damage could occour.

I had a chance to cross swap each one to the other and no processors were damaged in the tests.

It is safe to say, if you accidently put the wrong CPU in that no harm will come to it.

If I had killed a CPU, I would have reported such and had a replacement sent from Intel.

No harm, but no boot neither ;)

I put T2300 into ASUS CT-479 in Janually this year...
...CT-479 burned with FSB400 jumper setting, but T2300 is still alive:D

You're lucky!

Hold on for a second, I understand about Dothan, but Yonah/Merom should be pin compatible, shouldn't they? :confused:

they are 479 but the pin layout is different.

eeeuh? there both the same actually... they will work in the same board. Only merom needs a bit new chipset.

:D Like me put Pentium 3 into CT-479------------> CT-479 say good bye me.:D

Dothan and Yonah has completely different pin outs, including all there VCC/VSS

So insert wrong type of CPU can be very bad

Say, Half of VCC in dothan's pin out has been interchanged with VSS, and vice versa, that's what intel learnt from LGA775

Nobody doubts Dothan/Yonah are different, but are Yonah/Merom different? I guess not, since it was posted that Merom would work in existing Yonah motherboards...

Yonah = improved dothan
Merom = mobile conroe

merom is going to work on the aopen i975xa-ydg. isn't it?

That's two different things we are talking about here right now...

One is the cpu design, which of course, is different...
The other is the pin count (which is equal) and the layout of them, which is the topic here... and that's what Fugger tested and didn't damage any of the cpu's. But while we all know that Yonah doesn't work in Dothan mobos and vice versa, Merom cpus should work in existing Yonah designs, at least according to this:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1344442&postcount=235

So that means, that for Yonah/Merom, their pin layout essentially is the same, right?

Fugger has been using a Merom in his Yonah notebook, so it looks like they work just fine ;)

Yes, I read that now several times...;)

But the key is the 975-Chipset get the Merom running...;)

ok, i read his post wrong when i wrote. didnt mean to miss inform anyone. readnig the thread title then the posts had me thinking that yes the pin layout is different from dothan to yonah/merom.
