I dont have many pictures and my building and charging work space tends to be in a cattle shed in summer and the porch of the house in winter.

I scavenge most of my material from the off cut bins:

I keep my components in a warm dry room:
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/8333/stuffs7uv.jpg
As i dont build many units, i tend to build when i can, where i can. Im in the process of moving home so i may set myself up a propper workshop when im settled in.

Here a lot of info on machining on this site, There are even DIY instructions to build a controller and turn your lath into a CNC controlled one.you need some stepper motors, ball screws and a controller.

soft copper is hard material to machine
high rpm and sharp tool is my advice :)
Yeah, copper is very difficult because it is such a soft material. It tends to grab the bit or endmill or whatever you're working it with, and that's not good :D Like Blaster said, spin it up high and make sure your tools are sharp...very sharp.
Xeon th MG Pony
06-26-2006, 10:16 AM
? I love working copper and Alu on the lath, it all ways been the easiest, the trick is slow and staedy with the bit and never take too much off at a time. Remember you can all ways take some off but never back on, and using a good lubricant will realy improve all your cuts, you want hard lol try lead, the stuff seems to "flow" into the chuck and warp, total pain.
Okay, so building on what I said about grabbing and such, don't feed too fast...Exactly what you said. :D
Xeon th MG Pony
06-26-2006, 10:22 AM
ya, but it isn't hard to mill or turn, you just have to feed slow en steady, long as you adhere to the basics in milling and turning you'll have no problems :) set speed as per the standard and adjust your feed rate slower then you would soft steel us a good oil and your bits should all ways be sharp!!!! for any thing.
Blaster
06-26-2006, 02:21 PM
sorry Xeon but steel is much easier to machine than copper
wdrzal
06-26-2006, 03:44 PM
? Remember you can all ways take some off but never back on,
copper is one of the hardest common metals to machine, dosn't even compare to aluminium.
copper dulls bits 4 times faster than steel
oh and to the quote, YES you can put metal back on if you took off to much.;)
Xeon th MG Pony
06-27-2006, 09:31 PM
but putting it back on is allot harder ;) and all I can as to the copper never had any problems, so I stand on my saying that it is just fine as long as you follow good procedure

But why spoil the effect when Arthur the bull did such a nice job decorating it? :D
Daisy II to the left in the 3rd picture, plate HX, TEV regulated first stage and 2/3 the size of the original Daisy Cutter. Doesn't go very low (-111C min) but has huge capacity at -100C.
Tall Boy's on the workmate at the moment, he works 'ok' but i'm trying to squeeze -90C at 190W. Patching in a tank with cap tube to decrease the shock of ST2 startup...
Tom
oh man.. that place looks charming :p:
If I ever go to Gb I know where to stay at :P
