I finlaly got my metal cut my caps purchsed (damn there pricey, $50 for mateirals for 3 evaps) and I gave a shot at brazing. I just cant get the damn 1/4" thick 3" x 3" to get hot enough. I'm purging with propane as i go butstill oxidation around the top of the caps as well.
Any ideas I only have a MAPP torch.

Stick it on a BBQ burner or outdoor gas cooker, will help keep temps up and make it a lot easier, just don't burner yourself :D

I'd like to see some pics of the materials you are using. I'm collecting the stuff now to do a cap in cap using a Maze 4 gpu block base. I've found all the caps locally and they were very cheap, what was the expensive part of yours?

I took a .5", 1", 1.5", and 2" cap. 2" cap was $13, 1.5" cap was $7.50, really quite pricey. I got them at the local plumbing store.

takes me like 10 minutes to braze a evap with a acetilene+O2 torch :toast:

Wow... 2", that's going to be a huge evap. My largest cap is going to be 1 1/4", that fits the outer ring of the maze 4 block perfectly. I'm using 1/2", 1", and 1 1/4" caps. Will try to take pics when I start assembling it. I really like the maze 4 base, should work well for an evap.

Why are you making your evap so big?
You should be using 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" and 1 1/4" for a cap in cap. You will end up with a evap that will fit nicely ontop of the CPU and socket and not end up with a gigantic overhang like you will see with the 2" cap. That huge evap is going to give you insulation issues and poorer performance.
Also a MAPP torch should be more than enough to braze up that evap, just make sure you are using the optimal part of the flame the inner blue cone on the swirl tip and always keep the torch moving.
Also the total cost for the caps I just mentioned are $4 CAN.

Hey noob, ya can get a oxy/mapp torch from home depot or lowes for like 50 bucks if one is near. I also could NOT braize my cap in cap even on a propane stove with just mapp gas....MAYBE you could with a mapp turbo torch head but I'd still pick up that 50 dollar oxy/mapp....got my base AND caps GLOWING orange in about 30 sec. and its cheap. Just watch it cause oxy in those small canisters runs out VERY fast!

i've made a similar evap recently, I used my camping stove to to to keep an even heat over it, and used an acetylene torch to braze (no oxygen, sjut a tank of acetylene, i don't need to cut through it :D) hard part was to keep it from oxidizing too bad, but I had acess to argon for purging for the second try to that worked a bit better. i was kinda sloppy with the inside caps, but it's only really the ouside cap you have to be sure to get perfect, as thats the one holding in the refrigerant :)

I use two mapp torches, grip the evap in a mini vice, place one torch heating the base of the evap from the bottom, that alone gets it close to the rigth temp, then I use my Rothenberger torch to get it nice and hot and once the rigth heat is reached the 1st torch keeps it there while I move the second torch around the evap concentrated on the area Im brazing.
Works like a charm and uses less mapp gas as its quick and painless :D
