It seems merom will be a fair bit faster than yonah.... - The thing is, what will be out first, conroe or merom???
ATM it seems like merom will be out before ECS & AOpen has pulled themselves together and released the mobo's for yonah / merom...
If Merom will be out soon then I don't understand why there is Yonah?

I think yonah is just more energy efficient? Merom might just be for the desktop replacement crowd? This is all postulation of course.....and from and AMD guy none the less....hehe...

Neither do I, but the fact is WAY before MoDT launch Intel announced merom will be 20-40% faster, which really seems like they're just planning on skipping yonah...

Yonah was released first week of January, Merom is not lslated for release until Q4. That may be moved forward some.

Ahh oki :)
Thx for clearing that champ.

Merom is more power-efficient than Yonah afaik. i.e. Higher performance at same battery life, or longer battery life at same performance. At least that's what Intel said.
ULV Merom equipped laptops are targeting 10hr battery usage

Well the ES will hit our channels faster then q4 i think ;)

On Yonah and Merom;
A focused ion beam makes changes to the core, they cut the die down and what we see is the backside of the die. There is a top layer that can be removed. it contains no metal layers or transistors.
Intel said that they are not sure if removing that layer will yield a better over clock but the chips have much lower chance of damage from edge damage.

Hmm, im not completely sure what you mean, can you pinpoint it on a picture?

The cores are exposed on mobile, before the smallest chip could destroy the processor.

So yonah has a stronger core then dothan fugger? So hopefully less sanded cores?

less sanding? people lapped Dothan sucessfully?

FUGGER: Ah, so traditionally, the surfacing top of the chip has been the top of the wafer, but Intel has turned the chip upside-down so that the exposed core isn't as fragile?

No i mean like sanded/broken corners

Not sure how Dothan is oriented top to bottom, just got info for Yonah/Merom.

Mayb fun to know what the difference between dothan/yonah strenght is when it comes to broken corners etc.. So we dont need to worry about it when having a naked yonah....

Succesfully killed a Yonah - either it was from dropping it accidentally on the floor - or I must have been a complete moron when installing the cooler. Not sure which it was - since I had dropped the cpu right before installing it and I didn't properly inspect the core before putting it in the mobo. I just made sure the the pins were still all straight and that no edges ere messed up...
Well now I have slight spiderweb that is only visible at the perfect lighting nd angle and some egdes on the core nicked...no more boot.
Funny thing is I always tell my friends to shim the naked cores with a few layers of electrical tape - but why I don't listen to my on advise beats me.
Prolly shimming the cores deserves it's own thread - but than it should be common sense?

mikeguava: Question is, shim or custom ihs?

I would say shim - they won't throw off too much heat and the shim would be the way to go on those for sure.

They are very much alike. Merom basically has the same achitecture but all the units are wider for better throughput at the same clockspeed.
I gather they will spend some time optimizing bit. If you would just run the same Silicon for both at the same clockspeed, then Merom would use quite a bit more power (because it has more transistors).
My guess is that Intel pushes the server "Core"-based chips first, then Conroe, Merom last. They don't exactly have a problem in the notebook sector as it is and I doubt they would release Merom if it used more power at the same clockeed, no matter how much faster it runs code.

Good advice...
I've used these (http://www.microplex.no/product.aspx?pid=MESAIII&mcat=c333) on all my Dothan's after chippin' my first 730M (lucky me it still works).. :)

They can surely die from falling on the floor. Happened to me once with a picked celly 566 cpu - a friend of mine wanted to take a look at it and dropped it from 15 inches or so.. :stick:
Never worked again.

is it safe to assume that a laptop that has been ran over, beaten with golf clubs, bats, etc will have a cpu that doesnt work? pins are all straight:D ihs is in perfect tact, and the ram stick still worked...

You mean tape around the core to level it? I have an idea to put plasti dip around the core, so that pressure on the core levels a bit
