I have a couple questions on this proc I received.

1. It idles at 35 with stock voltage (Has no IHS), my other chips with IHS on are @ 28-29. Any special reason for this? (Using maze4 wateblock, firmly bolted down)

2. It wont even post with RAM in the usual slots 1&3, It will only post with ram in 2&4. When I try to boot @ 2.8ghz or so it will BSOD right around the welcome screen. Doesnt matter the voltage (Ben tested it 2.9ghz prime stable @ 1.4v). Is it possible the memory controller is fried? Or could phase have had a bad effect on it? Or is this heat related?

Thanks for the help, I need it.

Opteron 170 0550UPMW
eVGA NF41 SLI
H2O Cooling
2x 1GB Patriot Extreme @ under 200mhz
Antec truepower II 550

Ooo sorry, Opteron 170 0550UPMW
eVGA NF41 SLI
H2O Cooling
2x 1GB Patriot Extreme @ under 200mhz
Antec truepower II 550

Your results may vary, just because he could achieve 2900mhz 1.4 doesnt mean you can, most cpu's behave diffrently on diffrent motherboards, I bought my cpu knowing I could possibly attain 3000mhz, but alas, I cant do it.

What about the temps? He was getting 45C load @ 1.4v on air, Im getting 45C load 1.35v on water. This is 6C higher than any of my chips that had the IHS on!

You prolly have a bad mount, remount it again and see if it helps..

remounted already 2x, same temps.

He has a much better motherboard than you. There is a reason why that evga motherboard comes free with a video card.

Would a dfi SLI-DR help me that much?

I dont like the stories I heard of DFIs killing ram and CPUs.

Take into account also that you have 2 different boards with 2 different sensors on them....it is possible that his reads low...so his XXX on air is irrelevant to your XXX on water.

If his is reading low (all the DFI's do) then yours could be closer to correct or just higher in general.

Well, booted 2870 without issue @ 1.425v, and my temps are only 2C higher.

2900 priming well, maybe it just needed .075v bump to go over 2.8 :S

probably

Alright, the only thing bothering me at this point is the no post with RAM in slots 1+3, i used this configuration with 4 other CPUs without incident.

thunderstruck!

So move the RAM to slots 2+4? Iirc, he was using an Ultra-D, totally different then a free combo motherboard.

that chip worked on both orange and yellow slots on my ultra-D, expert, and venus with gskill hz and teamgroup micron, I don't have any experience with the evga mobo so I don't know why the temperature so high, if the waterblock seated properly then it's either the temp sensor is different than DFI like other suggested, or your H20 is taxing out and can't get rid of these dual core massive heat efficienctly, this chip never go over 45'C on air @2.9Ghz with those three mobo it was on ;)

Thanks Ben :)

I'll see what I can do.
