I was bored so I took a bunch of stuff I had lying around and scraped it all together to make a computer. The results: Intel 1.8 ghz celeron 384mb ram a 40gb seagate barracuda and an old DVD rom drive. I made this PC just to run rosetta and plan on running it 24/7. I can do so because the entire thing is silent and all fans are running on 5v. I give you: The Box PC

After you install the OS and other stuff, take that cd-rom out of there. Also, is there any chance of running DIMES??

Well done! The more the better.

I saw someone setup a pizza box PC one time for crunching. :)

Why should I get rid of the cd drive? It would just leave a hole in the box. Dimes uses a lot of internet resources right? My internet is only 1-way cable and still have to upload over 56k and is not always on.

I always build stuff on my bed, I'm gonna put it somewhere else later. The reason I don't put it on the floor is because there is too much junk on the floor already :)

Nice work there MarioMaster. I would leave it as an 'open' system. Better safe than sorry :hehe:

It's actually a grenade shaped container containing green pellets for my cheapo airsoft gun. The gun was $4 and included a laser sight, the guy gave me that thing of pellets free with the gun (holds 250 i think), and a pack of 1000 more was $2

Edit - The quiet although crappy fan in the PSU was having a hard time being the only exhaust fan in the case. I added some vents and a 90mm fan to the top of the box to add more circulation and keep temps down.

seems basically like my build, except you have a little more room and an actual CD rom on it.

if you put windows XP pro on it, you should only need a total of 2 wires actually running out from the case, network cable and power cable, use windows remote connection to control the computer, works great.

and for those that warned me about my "new" rig burning, it didn't, its still happily crunching away. gets a little warm on the bottom, but thats it. I recently installed a bigger heatsink on it, maybe help with insane cpu temps, lol

Man wish i was allowed to take a pic of my manta setup :( Fed ex box owns....come to think of it its seen faster cpu speeds than any case i've used :) Now if i could just figure out a way to make a DI time released dispensing unit we could have a 3.5 gig dual core cruncher.

It wasn't designed to look super cool like some cardboard cases I've seen, just needed a place to put these parts to keep them out of the way while crunching and keep the noise down a bit. It has been running since last night with no problems, but it only has win98 on it, don't have any extra copies of XP. All seems to be well and it crunched some work units last night. CPU temps are around 130ish with the stock heatsink with a 120mm fan plopped on top to cool the mosfets and the chipset too. This is the only rig I run 24/7. And BTW - my friend is folding for XS now too :)

When I was moving the box the video card pulled out of the slot while it was running, shorting something on the board. Needless to say you know it's fried good when the power led doesn't even turn on  (fans still powered on) but anyway went to the computer show on saturday and picked up a new case and motherboard. the board is basic but is better than i expected for $39
the case - not bad for $29 (included 430 watt generic PSU)

inside - i just used the old gigabyte cooler for the cpu

The cpu hsf looks funny.
You might add a fan on the back.

it's a pretty good cpu cooler although it does look weird - i will put in some new case fans, my newegg order is coming tomorrow

fans are in, full zero fill running right now, going to install ubuntu on it and finally get it back online crunching rosetta as it was intended to do
i love this $29 case and the power supply that came with it, probably cheapest case u can find for brand new and although i don't think the cables for the PSU are capable of handling 430 watts of power it's just fine for running my crappy 1.8ghz celeron
