As of July 1, 1992, the venting of CFCs and HCFCs has been prohibited by law. How about HFCs?
Stated simply - NO! Where the U.S. Clean Air Act prohibited venting CFCs and HCFCs back in July of 1992, the Clean Air Act has also implemented a clause of the 1990 Clean Air Act, that as of November 15, 1995, no alternative refrigerant is allowed to be vented into the environment. Further those refrigerants must also fully comply with the regulations on recover, reclaim and recycling.

when it says no alternative refrigerant is allow to be vented, does it mean HC's too

I ment for the title to read HC users........

Yes my question would have been on HC's. Technically thats like saying any chemical from now on must be recovered.

so even r290 can't be vented?

Propane is not illegal to release into the atmosphere.

Its propane, everyone uses propane in stoves and crap, theres no way they can say we cannot vent propane.

but propane is a HC so technically.........it should be

you burn propane , not vent it.

It's vented before ignition though, as not all of it will light.

Argueing about the propane is stupid.

You can let it out no issues. It's not like your releasing metric tons of it every day. Have some common sense people.

But as for HFC,HCFC,CFC < illegal to vent

What I don't understand is why it is illegal to vent 134a, but they have switched some air rifles and such over to it from CO2 and that's just fine to vent.

I know that 134a is less harmful to the environment, but really that just seems silly.

Just my opinion.

i agree. they use 134a in cans for air horns and the like so its a bit like double standards to me, however if thats the law then ..............

CO2 is also a refrigerant. If you may not vent CO2 you have to hold your breath :D

but to my knowledge americans don't see HC's as an alternative refrigerant?! I thought flammable gasses were banned in the US.

I think this whole thing blaming the hole in the ozone layer on us frigges is ridiculas. how do they know what the ozone layer was like 50 years ago !!!!! we didn't have the instruments to measure it. Keep in mind :stick: the first satlites were launched in the 60's and they wern't measuring ozone.

I'm studying physics and part of that education is astrophysics and for astrophysics the ozone layer is a big factor. and I can tell you we have loads of evidence that the ozone is depleting due to refrigerants. For instance we are now able to detect UV-radiation from the sun that we weren't able to detect 50 years ago. Simply because the ozone layer absorbed the radiation then and now it doesn't anymore. astrophysisists don't mind much because we don't need that much satalites anymore but the majority of the population can get skin diseases and all sort of nasty stuff so they will mind.

btw CFC's work as a katalyst to reduce ozone. So 1 CFC molecule can reduce an infinite amount of ozone.

Global warming isn't bs. but it is not only the fault of refrigerants, also the rest of the industry pumping filt in to our skies. Cars are also big sources of polution for the ozone layer.

People should walk around with filters in their nose for one day, when they see the amount of black dirt that's on the filters(what you normally would have stored in your lungs) after a few hours they would think different about the enviroment and what we do to it.

yes, how ever that flith is stored on the mucus covering your lung and celia push it up to the throat where you swallow it9Hmm yummy eh) so you are swallowing all that pullition and the gassious pullution may get brought into the blood. it is litle wonder why health is where it is when one takes the time to learn of their environment.

Ignorance is not bliss, it is death.

I know, and you should have a cert to to be using the refridgerant! well here in Canada any ways LOL Have to have a cert to buy a diferant bottle of it yet for the can you don't, ah got to love half backed idiotic laws eh?

I might actually get certified, get me some of those fancier refrigerants, not just 290 or 134a. That one site n00b 0f 1337 gave me has big tanks of r22 for $89 w/free shipping :)

lol ya I saw it, hope you guys realize how lucky you are for how simple it is! here it's a pita to get certified. But a realy good HVAC friend gave me 2 pounds of R-22 which will last dam well forever if you take good care to recover it befor doing any thing.

Them first satalites probably put that hole in the OZone layer in the first place .. :stick:
