Hey all. I accidently broke A pin off of my X2 4200+ because of my artic silver and XP90C. I broke 1 corner pin off completely but I was able to fix the other pins. How do i know if this pin is important or if it is how can i fix it best? Let me know please. Thanks, Tom.

AMD whitepapers at their website show pinouts of all AMD CPUs. Check it out. If it's a "GND" or "NC" pin....definately no problem. Even the loss of a "VCC" pin would be bearable. See what you can find.

It is a memaddb11 pin..... what does this mean? is this an immportant one?
freecableguy

extremely important, try to get it repaired or call it a loss.

how can i repair it?
is there any way to stick the broken pin into the pin socket of the motherboard just so that i have contact?

depends on if the pin was ripped away from the substrate (most likely) or the stem just snapped. post some high-resolution macro pics of the damaged processor

I didnt notice anything in the X2 white paper. I'd like to see the diagram just for the heck of it.

it looks like the stem was snapped.... i have an extra processor sitting around that i can rip some pins off of.... if i stick 1 of the pins from the extra processor i have into the mobo think it will work? It looks like there is a tiny little peice of the pin left on it...

post a pic, i can repair if it is truely a snapped pin

i only have a 4MP camera.... cant take a picture that you can really see the pin.... problem is i really need this processor today. Don't care if I ruin the mobo by sticking the pin in as long as it works.

dude, it doesn't matter if the cam is 4.0mp, just take a closeup picture of the area, so someone can atleast grasp/understand/observe what the damage is an can be.
visual representation is the best when dealing with hardware, and plus
its easier for us to help you out if we know anything
P.S.
Did you contact anyone at AMD?
Go on the AMD forums and ask around too, they probably have more members
better suited in advising you what to do about this problem

Yes, turn on Macro mode (The button with the flower on it). Watch the focus magically work! :)
Edit: Ahhh, that's better. Looks broken off, plus the one I see in there is bent a little.

Opps that's a critical pin cause it is use by cpu to acces memory address positions.
Cpu could or not work depending on which bit from the full memory address that broken pin is mean to be used.
System boot memory map is really important as is usually situated on first memory addresses.
Even you're lucky and your cpu work you won't be able to acces a portion of your system memory.
Hope that a RMA can solve your your problem ot that pin can be fixed.

Apparently you need the ORIGINAL heatsink that came with your EXACT processor. The warranty works with the serial number on the heatsink. So any old heatsink won't work.
I maybe wrong, but pretty sure that is how it works.

yeah, the cpu, manual, hsu, and box all have the same serial number, the one that starts X----

yea you can solder pins back on. or bring your cpu to a local jeweler and he will solder on a piece of gold wire. or click the link in one of the first posts and send the guy $30 and your cpu. or click the other link about using a piece of wire inserted into the socket hole. because of the xp90 and as5, i have broken pins off several cpus. i have a 3500 winny that is working with 3 missing pins. my 3800x2 @ 3000 is missing one of the corner pins. without it, i dont get cpu temp readouts, so i took a 2-3mm piece of the signal wire in a coax cable and stuck it in the corresponding socket hole. works fine. to put a piece of wire into the socket hole will take you all of 2 minutes. if you need your proceesor "today" get proactive. you are wasting time here.

Nah, I am going to RMA it with a random heatsink and see what AMD Does.... worst that happens is they say they wont replace it and they send it back to me.... best that happens is they replace it, so we will see. If they do send it back to me broken I am going to try to send it to someone on this forum to fix it.

Someone posted this already. I have dealt with the guy before. Had my cousin's 3200+ fixed. Job was flawless and I couldnt even tell. He has good soldering skills.
Also from the pics, it looks like the pin just snapped, leaving the base intact which is GOOD. Processor can be saved.
Contact the guy at the link above or PM FCG and ask him. :)

you can try a local jeweler. they have the equipment, the material and the skill. maybe save some time and money. wondering why you didnt put a piece of wire in the socket? with a pair of tweezers and a 2-3mm piece of wire it would have taken a hot 30 seconds.

I'm running out or Jewlery repair stores. I'm surprised that all 3 never saw never had anyone before me. I guess people don't break pings off of CPUs often and come in to repair them.

as long as the metal on your chip touches metal inside the socket so that electricity can travel it doesn't matter what is the material you use. Just stick a wire in there, and solder it if you feel like it, or don't if you're too lazy.

I wanted to sell it to someone, but I can't really sell it like this.
I am NOT making a paperweight out of this CPU. It was a really good clocker.
from what i understood theres a 1 year warrenty on OEM processors? or is this not the case?
