I'm sure ATI will follow suit :p

Okay did a quicky FRAPS:

Benched with: Stock 170, stock SLI 7800GT's
Duration: 30sec
Drivers: 84.25 (Obliv optimized)
Display Settings: Ultra High with HDR

Location: Outdoors-Out of city
Weather: Raining
NPCs present?: Yes, two.

Avg: 37.359
Low: 7
High: 62 (while loading! :D)

Results: Im going to cry :p:

A very difficult think you're asking perkam, there are a ton of tweaks apart from the in-game configs. Also without a demo benchmark or something... See sig for info.
GPU at 475/1135 to avoid artifacts.
Driver 84.25 of course.
Everything maxed in-game apart from grass/model shadows.
1280x1024HDR.
Vsync disabled.
Zero grass (it's beautiful at first, but it annoyed me and eats a lot of FPS)
No ini tweaks (yet :D)

Average: I can't say for sure, around 45fps.
Inside dungeons/houses: ~80-90 even 110
Outside: 25-45fps depending on the distance and vegetation.

Hope this helps. Now I understand why isn't there any serious performance review published :D

On EOCF they were getting worse results with the 84.25 than the 84.21/20 whatever it is.. someone should do a comparison

Well does anyone know a particularly tasking map on Oblivion for us to have one map to compare with ?

Omega and mursaat thx for results :) Though I already know my X800GT will be gasping for air on the loading screen :p:

I think most people out there don't know exactly what kind of hardware can run oblivion at reasonable fps.

The problem with obliv is any outside scene is always recreated, depending on season and time of day. I think we will see an obliv bench when someone gets whipping with the editor and makes a static portion of the world map to run through - OR - alternativly we could turn off every feature that will cause diffrences in hardware and run the bench a bit bare bones and in desolate areas.

yeah outside scenes we cant compaire cause of changing nature.
but the inside stuff should be the same for all of us.
sadly the inside FPS isnt the problem :/

Some keys to keep the game at acceptable FPS:

First toggle the console with the º key (left of number 1 in the keyboard) and type tdt to see dev info (tdt = toogle dev tools?)

Grass: 10-12 FPS Completely remove it. It is beautiful at first, but the impact in fps is great. And I've never seen forest and hills so full of grass :D

Draw distant objects: 10-12 FPS You lose more graphical beautiness with this option, but depending on the machine you'll benefit a lot more from the +fps than from seeing trees and houses at 4 miles...

For example: In Chorod (no spoiler, you can see it in the map included in the box) outside the house looking uphill I get 45FPS with both disabled and 20-25FPS with both enabled. My comp is in the sig.

yeah, well, grass and view distance makes alot for the game experience, so i personally would rather not play than than have to disable them.

getting around 25-30 fps outside and 60-80 fps inside. this with 84.25 and the coolbits-trick.

60 sec run inside Imperial City (the 1st closest one):

Avg: 49.790 - Min: 34 - Max: 65

Forceware 81.98

SD3700+ @ 2.7GHz, 6800GT @ 440/1155MHz, Gold VX 244MHz 2-2-2-5 blabala

1024x768, HDR enabled (which means no bloom effect & AA), all settings on high/on otherwise, cept shadows on grass and self & canopy trees which is off. :D

Will try inside the sewers & when u get out of there next.

EDIT: 60 sec run in sewers:

Avg: 62.392 - Min: 37 - Max: 100

Out in the wild, when u 1st get there 60 secs:

Avg: 37.416 - Min: 29 - Max: 51

Wouldn't have expected this good speed with these settings with a 6800GT :)

Nope...just the 2 vertex pipes(8x1,6).

Nice to see that the game does so well with just 128mb of video memory. I have a fully unlocked 6800NU 128mb now and I think i will keep it a little longer seeing how well your (with a respect) not so powerfull card handles it ;)

I'm going to look for better memory timings now, because when fully unlocked the card only does 800mhz on the mem (from 950mhz with just 12 pipes).

For some reason 84.25 drivers keep crashing Oblivion . I have also read that many other ppl have the same trouble with these drivers. Really wierd they suposed to increase overall performance in Oblivon not to crash it :P

I know my friend play with an ati 9600 pro,768mb of ram and it run "almost" as well as hl2 or WoW with the same setting!:p:

currently running at 1600/1200 +HDR, max draw distance, max distance check box's for building/forest/landscape settings are ticked, render distance on objects/people ect about 1/4 the up, shadowing and grass disabled. Runs smooth as, FPS wise i hit as low as 40FPS in battles, im normaly running at 60 outdoors/on horse and i never fall below 80 in doors.

current rig

opteron 165@2.6Ghz, 2Gb Gskill HZ, DFI ultra D r.ado, x1900xt-x, hitachi deskstar sata2 250GB, pcp&c 510deluxe, watercooled.

once ive got a second PSU hooked up and a waterblock on the x1900xt-x and oc'ed it i'll up the distance sliders for objects and people a touch more.

In general fraps has been showing the following;
low 30's outdoors
30's to mid 40's in cities
high 20's to mid 30's in combat
50-60ish in smaller areas with less lighting

res: 1280x960
AA: none
mode: fullscreen, v. sync
Screen Effects: HDR
Distant Rendering: All (max distance in game)

I believe I turned off some of the extra shadow options (misc ground stuff)

Running on a X1800XL, 3800+ both stock and 1gb 2-2-2 DDR

looks great & is fully playable

i only get 20 to 30 FPS outside, but im surprised at how playable it still is. Its not like a fast action FPS whereyou need 60+ to ensure smoothness. I run at 1280x1024, and the video settings i left at where the game detected they should be, (it said High)
EDIT:Inside framerates are wicked, usually 50+, and at times well over 100.

Guys, I have a question. It's more about the game looking good than max FPS.

What texture size looks best? Large, Medium, or Small? I assume it's large but I'm not sure.

I'm surprised more of you with x1900's aren't playing with HDR+AA. Using 4xAA really doesn't give much of a hit.

Chuck Patch (http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=21960)

Replacing the "low" res distant land textures gave me no hit in performance, and stops distant land from looking completely aweful. (http://www.fileplanet.com/162126/160000/fileinfo/Elder-Scrolls-IV:-Oblivion---Landscape-LOD-replacement-textures)

Here's a normal map replacement that prevents those square tiles from showing up in the distant land (http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=474)

Grass definitely is the limiting factor on my x1900xt - gonna try playing around with the settings.

Its not like a fast action FPS whereyou need 60+ to ensure smoothness.

For a pure marksman, anything under 35 fps REALLY affects combat at a long range. When there are LOTS of guards or whoever straight mobbing on me and it drops down to like 12 FPS, headshots are next impossible. At times I wish I could melee or cast, but meh.

MARKSMAN FTW!

indoors I am usually between 90 and 140 fps depending on how many characters or items are on the ground, and outdoors I have turned grass right off (I CAN't TAKE IT ANYMORE!) and everything is maxed and it is typically between 33 and 75 except for loading or times of excessive combat. It still drops down to 10-20 fps when teh **** hits the fan, but I am usually quickloading after that happens.

I pretty well only play oblivion (and Hardwood Euchre) these days, this is my 24/7 setup for oblivion, seems to be best performance/appearance for me after much playing around.
