Raising the PCI-e frequency will not kill your card
It can however corrupt data on SATA drives. As a general rule, upto 120 MHz should be OK, but its best to leave it at default 100 MHz as PCI-e locks are effective these days. (Unlike the intel i915 days...ah the memories :D )
does it affect the performance much?

I've heard that upping PCI-E to at least 118Mhz is required for stability on 7900GTX's over 720 core.

PCIe frequency definately has something to do with GFX oc'ability. For example my X800GTO R423 core does only ~640MHz @ PCIe 100MHz. Give it 120MHz and it goes atleast up to 666MHz

I have ran mine at 105 for ages now with zero issues on all my ATI cards.
might try upping mine then :)
i run 105mhz on SLI, never had a single problem

I've run up to 120mhz, never noticed any increase in OC'ability but DID notice a 300+ point increase in 05, at high speeds (750/900).
That came at around 105mhz though, between that and 120, little increase.

I run mine at 105MHz just because. I notice no difference with the frequency higher. It's kind of like filling your car's tires with 34PSI instead of 32PSI, in my mind.
