View Full Version : How many of you are running Vdimm off 5V line 24/7?

Today i ordered a pair of 2x512 utt BH-5 and want to run them at 250MHz in my DFI Ultra-D 24/7 so i think i'm gonna need ~3,4V to do so.

Now i've read some things about a mosfet/Vreg getting extremely hot when running the Vdimm off the 5V line by setting the jumper to the 4V position, so i'm a little put off by that thought.
I've also read that the higher the Vdimm the less hot the mosfet gets.

I have a 80mm fan blowing over the RAM area and quite some airflow but i'm still a bit unsure.
Do i need an extra fan over the top right corner?

So how many of you are running Vdimm over 3,2V by just using the 4V jumper 24/7 on your Ultra-D or SLI and over what period of time?

I ran it for a couple of months until i used this trick http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=61632 I didn't adjust the rails though..
My VX Gold runs much better now running off the 3.3v line... and the temps dropped by 5°C

I'm running my Vdimm from the +5V now, for over a year i think. :)

With ~ 3.3V Vdimm, there is a temperature different by about 40-45°C, if i switch from the +3.3V for the Vdimm to the +5V.

I'm using 3.2 trick, works like a charm

Ive been running this way for a year but dont have my comp on 24/7.

What temps? PWM ic?

40-45C difference at the mosfet you mean?
Do you have a fan blowing over the mosfet?

How much Vdimm are you running 24/7?

There should be no problem with sufficient mosfet and RAM cooling.

Not directly, just the 120mm in the side door. U can see it, if u click the link in my signature. :)

I made a post about the temperature differents, a few days ago, and made some videos, too. Look here --> http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1331222&postcount=134

Yup... My temps were usually ~36C idle.. now they're 31C with the trick...

I forgot the exact temps I measured when I had the heat gun.. but they were around the same as the PWM iirc..

Im using 3.4V with passive cooling .. 1 year. No problems!
But if you switch to 5V rail, DDR mosfet is so hot :)
Excuse my english

PWM-Sensor is about 5cm away from the Vdimm-Mosfet, i don't think it can messure the "real" difference. ;)

My mobo hangs upside down... any heat generated from that regulator reaches the PMW sensor with ease...

That could be a reason, for this plus of about 5°C. :)

I´m running my VX normally with 3,2 V - sometimes for benching even more - with set at 4 V now nearly a year without probs.

In the past (running the sys in the case) I used a 80 mm cooler for the Mosfets, since a few month watercooling...;)

Is it new mem or pretested by somebody?
I've loaned Teamgroup Xtreem BH5 sticks from Desertshooter but @ 3.72v they won't even pifast @ 273 and more volts doesn't help :(
(all this actively cooled by a full speed 12cm fan around the dimm/pwmic/mosfet area while jumper @ 5v)

Using 5v line daily for a year now. 3.5vdimm, 2 x 92mm on ram and 12 cm fan on heatsink upper right corner. When idle heatsink is about 10 degrees over ambient, open case. Highest ive seen under full load is mid 40's. After some time me VX ram started giving troubles, me BH5 is all fine.

So, Desertshooter huh? :D He was the one you didn't want to tell me about. :p:
RAM i ordered is brand new, it's Gskill GH.

How was your PiFast result btw? Did you beat me?

I managed 285 pifast on these sticks somehow LOL...3.72v for real, but my cpu really needs a bit colder water to go above 3200...:D

So my 36.61 still stands, maybe ice cubes will help...

ive been using it for around a year on 2 ultra-d's. the hs to the right of the dimm slots gets very hot. gets hotter the lower you set the vdimm. overvolts around .15v, could be the psu? this psu runs at very high voltage - 12.47, 5.32, 3.47. i use a 80mmx15mm fan for ram and to cool the mosfet. just propped on top of the xp90. stays pretty cool. have never felt the ram even get warm, and the hs doesnt burn my finger anymore.

very truly yours,
