70C would definitely worry me
I think most BIOSes should warn you if the cpu gets that high

Yeah that is high man...yeah I usually set in my BIOS for my system to shut down if my CPU ever hits 65C...I only choose that because that is the lowest temp option for that setting... I wouldn't like even 60C although I believe the ClawHammers did run warmer than the newer 90nm ones...

Anything over 56C is not good, 70s + cause damage.

I personally think you need to reseat the HS/F and check to see if the cpu fan is running.

Did you use thermal paste by chance, if so what kind ?

Last, are you overclocking your CPU

arctic silver 5.
Overclocked to 2.65-2.7 (from 2.4)
memory stock 3-3-3-8
220x12

my CPU at startup always hits 50... no matter what.

using stock HS/F. GPU(X800 GTO2 Ocd to X850 XTon stock cooler) generating tons of heat after i overclocked it and the fan for it is blowing air into the case, increasin temp of the case.... the fins on my HS read around 50C external temp monitoring on my case. and my CoreCenter (MSI monitoring program) reads CPU at 65.
