I purchased a luck-o-the draw Opteron 170 from Amazon and received an 0550 VPMW.

Unfortunately it was mishandled in shipping and the IHS was detatched from the CPU... along with the inside green packaging being turned to dust.

Now, I was intending to overclock the CPU conservatively with the stock cooler. I like to overclock but these days I don't like the hint of instability.

I'm now torn between returning it for a refund (out of stock) or testing it out. I've never worked without the IHS on the A64 series CPUs. Could this be safely used with the stock cooler or should I just return it and move on?

Thanks for any advice.

detached IHS?

dude, if that happened to me, I'd be thanking the Gods! Wouldnt have to razor that darned IHS off, not to mention ruining the core in doing so.. lol

read around on how to mount a block/IHS without risking damaging the core

Enjoy lower load temps when you succeed! :)

Thanks for any advice. What's wrong with this picture.... The chances of losing the IHS in shipping has got to be near zero... It must have been previously removed and tested. I'd return that in a heartbeat! :(

EDIT: "Inside green packaging", then it's a retail chip? Goodbye warranty...

Many strugle to remove the IHS with a blade let alone it coming of in a delivery.

Id consider testing it if its ok and OC good then keep it. If not RMA now.

You will need a screw down, etc HSF like a zalman or Big Typhoon.

The ~ 3/32" thickness of the IHS posses a real problem on using the Stock HSF UNLESS: (Suggestion for initial testing)

Computer MUST be horizontal (_______ ) to do this:

1. Clean all parts thoroughly (IHS (Both sides) HSF base, and CPU)

2. Apply compound (I like Ceramique :D, cleans up easy w/ alcohol ) to Top of IHS and CENTER it on Bottom of HSF, THEN USE FINGERS IN PLASTIC BAG TO PUSH IT TOGETHER so it will stick :stick:

3. Apply some more Ceramique (another half ricegrain drop) to the top of CPU.

4. CAREFULLY Put the HSF + IHS on top and LOCK it in.

5. Test for functionality and Basic OC testing

6. If the chip is good, Get TTBT and go look around for my posts on TTBT mounting here (search is your friend :fact: ) and loose the IHS. Even w/o lapping the core (LAP THE HSFs (Stock and TTBT, lookup how also )) you will gain both OC and stability since even if the temp looks the same the heat dissipation is quicker since the IHS is NOT in the way.

Also not having the IHS can be a good thing, the last Chip I got had it mounted @ a slight angle so that the IHS contact to the core was not centered  .

Good luck and let us know :D
