View Full Version : Thermochill Rad really better?

OK, I've decided on my WC'ing system except for radiator. Is the Thermochill (pricy) that much better than the BIX or PA160 or ? I will go dual 120mm for my radiator.

Yes, theyre quite a lot better... up to you if theyre worth the price difference.

PA160 *IS* thermchill... ;p
...its slightly better than 120.1 with a 40cfm fan, and slightly worse than a 120.2 with an 85cfm one. Seeing as the 120.2 is cheaper and gives you the same cooling with less noise, the 160 (while a great rad) is only for special applications or if youre strapped for space.

Better... definitely YES. Better enough to actually allow a higher overclock... generally speaking that would be no.

Just swapped out my single BIX to a PA120.1 and there is no comparison. I have a pair of 24v Panaflo M1A's (Newegg screwed up, but turns out nice) running on it at 12v and performance under load is better than with the BIX with a 114CFM Panaflo U1A. Idle temps are a couple of degrees higher but load is what we care about right? ;) Load temps 4-5 higher than idle and never breaks 40c.
CPU is a naked Opteron 148 (CABNE 0530APMW) at 273*11 at 1.45v.
Loop is Laing D5, Storm Rev.1 and the Thermochill.

Deffinetly better than anything else, but if ur going with a dual, the MCR220QP is really hard to beat for the price, compared to the thermochill if ur in the U.S. the thermochill deffinetly is of better quality (made in the UK vs china), but the performance difference is small

And what do you think about HWLABS quality (compared to Thermochill and MCRs)?

BIP 3 is lot cheaper and the performance isn't that much worse than PA.120.3. I'm going to buy Lian-Li PC-7 Plus II case and BIP3+3x120mm Yate Loon D12SL-12 (already have the these) and mount the rad on the top of the case :)

hwlabs = phillipenes..

swiftech = china...

so i dont really know.. ive had alot of hwlabs rads come through here and all of them seem to be of top notch quality.

but for what its worth, the MCR rads are better for low noise fans than any of the hwlabs rads. and they come in double and tripples now...

I have ordered a PA160 with a shroud from over-clock.co.uk. I was considering purchasing the HE120.1 or the PA120.1 but i finally made up my mind and ordered the PA160. Did i make the right decision? The fan that i'm am going to use is a 120mm Yate.

dont know if you saw this or not but it pretty much says it all about thermochill beeing the best

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=77260

i've had the 160 and got great perf out of it but wanted just that little bit extra and went with the 120.2

Rasco

I have read trough about 80% of all the stickes, I promise :)

Damn, Termochill really rocks. And it looks like the PA160 can handle the job very well for being a singelrad. Since i am cooling cpu+gpu+chipset i believe that it's good that i have the MCR-220 as a mainstay (can you use that word?).

just another way to say what OCme said

if you want the winner go Thermochill if you want the first LOSER go something else

@ Rasco

Get yourselves a 14cm yate! (D14SM-12) U have to make your own shroud(cardboard ftw) but that fan must be perfect for the pa160!

now if i only could remember wich store who sold them for abot 10$...

Rasco
10-18-2006, 12:13 PM
I already got my beautiful Blue-led 120mm Yate next to me here and i have ordered a PA160 with a shroud. But, how much do you think the performence gain would be with a 14 cm yate? I mean, I live in sweden and even if the fan just costs 10 bucks i'd still have to pay 40 dollars to get i shipped over the atlantic :) You have got an obession with cardboard shrouds, right? :D

eXa
10-18-2006, 04:26 PM
it doesnt cost 40bucks.
Petra sendt me a sunbeam rheobus and i was 10.XX in shipping. Yes the total price for the fan is kinda high. but hey, a normal papst 120mm fan cost more than the fan including shipping here in norway!

Btw. Yeah, cardboard is great! But i would get a metal one if it was one. I have a cardboard shroud on my bip 3 right now cus im only using 2 yates on it...

Rasco
10-18-2006, 04:54 PM
Maybe I exaggerated shipping cost a bit :) But I ordered a PA160 today with the shroud that should fit my 120mm Yate perfectly, right? I'll see how it works out, I am going to place a MCR-220 in my loop aswell. So I hope i'll keep everything quite cool. But if i'll consider buying the 14cm Yate then i'll travel to notodden and you'll make me a custom cardboard shroud eXa. OKEY? :D

eXa
10-18-2006, 06:35 PM
120 yate will be fine.
Lol! if you come all the way over here ill even paint it black for ya!

when you ordered from Petra's did you get like a bill for importing taxes or sth? If so much was it (in $)?
I'm asking because I'm planning to order from PTS too and I'm curious if I'd get sth like that...

After what I've seen in my tests, Thermochills are better. Are they worth the price? Depends on your rig.
If you have limited space for a rad, it's definitely worth the price. If you've got lots of space, but still your rads don't perform well, then it's worth the price too.
But it would not make too much sense if you have a big case with enough space to fit a .3 rad and you're only cooling one CPU plus one GPU or so. Then, a "normal" rad should have enough performance to handle that.
The performance difference is quite large I'd say, but you would only see it if you need that kind of performane.

hmm funny thing hwlabs radiator from the philippines but there are only a few of us watercooling in the philippines and we'd have to import most water cooling stuff...

performance with minimal noise is what i'd go for, so thermochill, plus undervolted yates fan (or in my case undervolted sanyo denki is what i had lying around...)

Yes, because of the shroud for example ;) That's true. Or being able to get away with one fan less running when using a PA .2 instead of MCR320 or so. That's right.
There are many reasons why you could prefer one or the other. For me, even though they are so thick, their "performance per space used" ratio is way better than somewhere else. Length normally is a problem, thickness shouldn't be (as you'll need some space on intake and exhaust of the rad anyhow to yield good results).

I (think I) was quite lucky when i received my order from Petras. Normally I would have had to pay 25% of the package worth in VAT (Value Added Tax) when the order enters the EU. And further on you sometimes have to pay customs (for something). I didn't have to pay for anything but the order from Petra and i was luckily excused from both VAT and customs.

I don't know how common it is that people have to pay for VAT's. But hopefully you'll be excused from those taxes like me. And regarding the customs I think that's something you won't have to worry about, hopefully.

@ eXa & Rasco: Why do I get the feeling that I shouldn't announce any trips I'll be taking to Norway and/or Sweden... ;)

@ marauder16: It seems kinda hit or miss, as far as getting charged customs fees goes... so it's hard to say what would happen.

@ Petra: Thanks for those kind words. Everything that I'm holding (and chewing :)) is from your shop. Now you know what happens when your products enter the European Union. They end up in some crazy swede's mouth

Ok, so when are you coming? :p:

Edit: i usually get around vat, if its below 200nok (30.75$) we dont have to pay any vat. if its below 1000nok (154$) we dont have to pay any vat if the packeage is marked "gift". And if the value is more than that... well we just mark it as less than 150$ and gift anyways!

Soo ive been getting a lot of "gifts" lately :D

Customs do try now and then anyways, but ive only had to pay for one until now and it was clearly marked 200$...

Eh, won't be for at least another year or two...

See, my fiancee is half Norwegian and has quite a few relatives in Norway... So, we've been wanting to go over there together to visit the ones who can't normally make it to the US and, perhaps, wander Europe for a while. However, neither of us will likely have the time to until the store becomes a little more self-sufficient and she finishes with earning her BS in EE from Cal Poly.

My package from Petra's wasn't grabbed by the customs either. However, my more expensive package from Performance PCs was. Damn that's unlucky :( Perhaps i had some luck with my order. Maybe our countries customs doesn't have the same accuracy or the same will to charge us innocent watercooling fellows. I hope you guys'll get luckier next time . Seriouslly JoeBar and Xavior, it's like getting slapped in the face having to cough up 55 dollars extra.

marauder16

having to cough up 55 dollars extra. - it was euro, which is a 'little' bit more , more like 70$, but no matter, I think I'll order sth smaller like RAM from the UK and see what the customs will be, then I'll order from Petra's...

EDIT: Ok, I checked around local forums about our customs and I found out that there's no fees for computer parts, only you have to pay our VAT, which is 22% (yeah I know it's high :( ) but I think I can live with that...
