View Full Version : Any thoughts on Iwaki silencing?

My WMD20RLZT is a PITA to sleep near, so I want to silence it, as its the loudest thing in my rig. Current plan is to use rubber isolation mounts (currently using a mousepad in a fairly ineffective way), but I'm looking for other ideas too. I'm also planning on buying/building a fan controller, so I'm covered there. I just want this thing to be more tolerable to sleep with.

I dont think the "mummify in akasa paxmate" method i use with my 50Z would be good, considering how hot the stormtroopers get...

Bloody could you post some pics of your loop and system so I can get an idea for how I need to arrange my gear. I'm going to be using a md20rzg with two MCR 220's im series.

attached is a pic of the outside of my setup. pump housing is rotated 180 degrees so that the outlet goes straight down a 80mm fan hole (no fan obviously), tubing runs to CPU and comes straight back out.

i don't think copper tubing around the pump would be too good an idea because...
1) more heat in the loop
2) more restriction
3) could cause more noise through vibrations between the pump and the tubing

i wonder if like a MDF shell with a silent fan would reduce noise (via MDF's sound insulative properties) appreciably.

put some bubble wrap underneath it?

i use a piece of 1/2" neoprene underneath the mounting bracket. it works extremly good and makes it as quite as possible. i also reccomend a fan blowing across the stromtrooper to keep it nice and cool.

How long ago did you install it? It took a week or so for my MD-20rzg to get all the air bubbles out, and until then it was pretty loud.

Tinker, what parts do you have in your loop and how much tubing do you have total? My Rzg being a complete pain in the arse about bubbles my tee basically feeds directly to the inlet and still its grinds and whir's for hrs on end.

A 2x120 heatercore, a transmission cooler, a swiftech 5002, and a t-line. Yeah, it took forever to get the tiny, tiny bubbles out especially since I had to use zerex. I just let it run and run and they eventually bled out.

I think it's just such a high-powered pump that it really mixes the air in and doesn't give it mcuh chance to leave.

buy the MD version, put some neoprene under it. Or buy an RD and have pretty much total silence (with some neoprene again).

You could put your pump & dual core in a seperate enclosure & sound proof it & put it up under yur puter. Kinda like a promie...

I plan to as soon as I buy a couple of the swiftech dual rads because I can't go SLI with the iwaki in the case. I can barely install one graphics card.

Time to build an uber sexy external box then. Thats what I'm working on now. Seeing how swiftech just released a triple rad I might hold on long enough to get one of those with my set up.

This is what my last try at silencing my md20rz was. Made a box out of 3/4" MDF, suspended the pump with bungie cords in the middle of the box. Lined the walls with foam, and had a 120mm sucking air through it. Was the quietest I ever got it.

putting foam insulation under it will make it buttloads quieter, but it will still rumble and be annoying to sleep next to... I suggest playing some enya when ur trying to sleep.. will dround out the noise of the iwaki..

covering the iwaki with ANY insulation will do two things.. cause the pump to overheat and have the thermal protection kick in, and secondly put ALOT of extra heat into your loop.. both things you must avoid. only thing u can do is to put it in a seperate box, but that isnt really worth it.
