I've been contemplating my options with regards to rigs for crunching and was wondering whether it might be worth swapping out my p4 2.8 non-HT (clocked at 3.36) for a sempron 3000+. The p4 benches at about 2788/7277.
Anyone know anything about these socket 939 semprons? I see benches from socket 754s and they look good but I have no idea what I can expect overclock wise from a palermo core.
It would be a nice cheap (this is most important :p:) upgrade if worthwhile - found a few on ebay for 90-95 euros. I already have a spare 939 mobo and 2gb of crucial value which does DDR500.

I believe you would only have to get that Sempron clocked around 2.3 - 2.4 Ghz to beat your P4. Chances are it should go to 2.6+ with little effort.
I say pick it up. It will definitely be faster than your P4.

Are you kidding me ? Sempron FTW ! Actually I would love to know where to get a 939 sempron.... since board support is much better. That sempron should do 2.4 @ the very worst. I'd expect 2.6 with little effort as well. The highest performing chip on Team LBM is in fact a socket 754 sempron 2800+.

ebay is the best bet, i keep looking but theres never any here in the UK.
theres one at the moment but its £65+£15 shipping and seeing as i can get a 3000+ for like £95 its hardly worth it.

From what I read on a german forum the 939 Semprons dont clock very well. Some hit high clocks (around 2.9), but most seem to max out at around 2.4ghz. But if you have the spare parts already, get one and report back :)
It should be faster than that p4 for sure, even at 2.4.

Ok guys, thanks for the feedback :D
I'm gonna wait a couple of days before I make any descisions, there's an a64 3000+ I've got my eyes on and it's well below the price of the sempy right now. It's new also but an LLBWE 0533 so an older stepping than the sempron but it's like 1/10 the price right now :p:
Either way the P4 goes in favour of AMD
