View Full Version : The Best Gaming Keyboard...

ReD.SkY

I need a keyboard, a keyboard with a backlight...
What in your opinion is the best?

The Most i can afford is the G15... so please dont reccomend anything more expensive than that.

Guidelines:
-Cheaper or same price than G15
-Backlight (preferably LED)
-No Saitek Eclipse (i dont like it)

Thanks Ahead of time...

G15 and the eclipse are the only backlit keyboards that aren't cheap crap. Get the eclipse. It felt weird switching from my logitech but it's a lot more solid after you get used to it.

The G15 felt cheap or what?

i dont like the eclipse as the keys are spread out...

have you use both the G15 and the eclipse?

is the eclipse better because the keys have a better feel?

My question is why do people need backlights on their keyboard?

When I am gaming I tend to look at my monitor...

Best Gaming keyboard: Deck
Best everyday keyboard: Deck
Best illuminated keyboard: Deck

Cost an arm and a leg, but without a doubt the best keyboard I've owned. Been through well over a dozen keyboards looking for just the right feel and quality. Deck is the best.

Cheapest deck is $99.00 not including shipping. But you do indeed get what you pay for...

My favorite plugin is for Miranda IM (Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ) messaging program that allows you to send and recieve im messages though the LCD screen.

and while in game i can type a message to a friend, great for those games where you want to chat with your friends but dont want to alt-tab all day.

The lebedev keyboard definately looks nice. I'd love to have one to be able to program in all of the pro tools and nuendo shortcut keys. From the looks of it though, it doesnt look like the keys would have a satisfying feel or tactile click to it though which I would imagine would not be great for gaming. Guess I'll have to wait and see when they become readily available.

My keyboard is comfortable, even though it's full of crumbs. I don't see a need for shiny keyboards. Plus, on most expensive keyboards, the way the enter key and backspace are laid out (if you get what I'm at) is conveniently placed so I keep hitting it while trying to press shift. Rather annoying. Nothing beats an old generic keyboard for comfort. Beige colour is a plus too :D

What is so good about deck keyboards? They don't seem to be of high quality, and they are damn expensive.

Deck boards are built like a tank. The owner company build keyboards for heavy duty usage, such as those found in police cruisers and industrial areas where a reliable and well built long lasting keyboard are paramount.

Also Decks don't use the cheap rubber membrane key switches. They are built with Cherry keyswitches.

http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/switches/key/mx.htm

This is what makes the feel of a quality keyboard. Each key is its own individual switch, unlike the rubber membrane keyboards where all the switches are together. Also each switch has its own LED to light it up.

So what you pay for in a deck keyboard is quality. Shame they are not available in local stores. Once you type on a keyboard with quality keyswitches it is very hard to go back to cheap rubber membrane boards...

Threadjack! I'm looking for a new keyboard as well, since my old wireless logitech is finally wearing out. I do mostly gaming, but I'm not looking for a keyboard that's flashy or backlit, and I could care less about programmable function buttons.
What I'm looking for is good tactile response. I'd love to be able to afford the Das Keyboard II or the Raptor K1, but I need to keep this under $50.
I can get a good deal on the Cherry G81 3000, or their Cymotion line. Are there any other mechanical keyswitch keyboards in the same price range?

The one thing that really turns me on about the Deck boards is that they have individual LED's for each and every key. I have an Eclipse II right now and it's a great board but same as the first Eclipse I had the backlight coverage is pretty poor since it only uses a few LED's to light the entire key set. I'm heavily considering the upgrade to a Deck.

If it's for gaming,
and you're going to be holding on to it a WHILE - as in you don't plan on buying another keyboard for a long time
Logitech G15. I like them so much, I have one for my stay at home system, and one for my LAN rig.
They need a little more space than your typical keyboard, and the flip-up LCD does mean it can pretty much never go on an under-the-desk shelf type thing - but none of that bothers me. I set my present desk up to accomodate that keyboard.
G15 - FTW

I had the G15 for awhile and it was a great keyboard but definately not a keyboard I felt like I couldn't live without. There are many great keyboard options right now. The LCD didn't really appeal to me much after a while either and I had it fully modded for some pretty cool stuff. I found myself using my CF bay display more than the keyboards display.

Im dumb for buying the eclipse, it's rice, you don't need a gaming specific keyboard really, Just a solid, full keyboard, I prefure the Dell PS/2 keyboards! They have great key stroke distance and are quite. On the eclipse, typing is hella loud, and the transparent key tops isn't the best. I can type the same in the dark with a normal keyboard vs. the eclipse.

IBM Model M. Have not come across a solid, durable keyboard with the clickyness feel like the Model M.

G15 and the likes just add more overhead to the CPU. There was even a bug which caused it to make games like FEAR crawl. Unless you are one of the types who is attracted by shiny colors and useless displays, just about any keyboard that allows you to press 4+ keystroke buttons at the same time will suffice. Crappy keyboards will flip out if you try a funky combination like W+D+SHIFT+SPACE , which could equate to "slowly walking forward while strafing to the right, then jumping"

I had two logitech elites in a row, but they didnt last long enough. After about 8months the keys would become very sticky and I would make a lot of typing errors. I think I really prefer a laptop style keyboard though. The keys on the eclipse are a little stiff and too far apart for my tastes.

If you are willing to dish out the cash, get the Logitech G15, I love mine, the keys on the left are really handy for WoW. But I use the numpad for CS. There's also a G15 without the LCD, I think it's called the G10.

The Steelpad keyboard looks real nice and I plan on getting one eventually.

If you wunna be cheap, get the original Logitech Elite Keyboard if you can find one, it's super leet <3. The one with the spindal volume control, not the new :banana::banana::banana:ty one with the buttons for volume control, it's not as super leet.

Saitek Eclipse red for me. Had it for almost a year and it's very solid with good key lighting. Not too bright yet not too dim.

The keys are very solid in action and the wrist-rest really does help reduce strain. Hell...I even wrote my thesis on this keyboard.

Plus if you have all black stuff it's very understated and matches quite well without all the gimmicky crap on the logitechs, etc.

If you do go with the Eclipse you'll be more than pleased if you're simply looking for a stylish, functional, durable and comfortable keyboard.

I game semi-professionally, and here's my opinion on keyboards.

Best to worst.
1. Saitek Eclipse (have and love it)
2. Steelkeys (don't have but have played on it and is very nice)
3. Standard IBM keyboard (have but switched to Saitek Eclipse)
4. Logitech G-15 (have, the display is nice, but the keys are too soft and too unresponsive. Gamers need the fastest response they can get. Oh yeah, and the paint peels off.)

G15 FTW! Great keyboard. Plus the LCD.
Echovoice CS:S plugin shows realtime stats, then there's FRAPS and G15Netspeed.
Tactile feedback is good, but not as springy as my beige 101-key.
The keys worn out are W, A, S, D and C. Quite worn out actually. can't really tell between a C and a O. But apparently this has been fixed in the newer revisions of the keyboard. I plan on RMA'ing this keyboard after my RMA'ed G7 arrives.

Edit: The G keys are useless; they're too far away from WASD. I binded the keys to buyscripts, but its too slow since it EMULATES keys (press 1, wait a quarter of a second, press 2, wait a second), not directly interacts with the program. Instead I bind to F1-F12.

I love my logitech g15 - the little volume, play/stop, and next/previous track buttons kick ass for when I'm in-game - otherwise I really don't do much with the LCD, and have yet to bother with the "G" macro keys

edit: wow why did I type razer instead of logitech... I swear I'm retarded sometimes... I guess I was typing Razer because I have a copperhead to go with the keyboard *shrug*

I'm using some Trust cheapo POS, keyboard doesn't matter for gaming, mouse does, so I use G5 :)

Plus my keyboard has lots of multimedia keys which are really useful..

Just got a Saitek Eclipse for Christmas and it's really fantastic. It's really sturdy, layed out well, and just feels good. It isn't silent, but it's not extremely loud (I'd say it makes the same sound as any other normal keyboard). The LED backlight really doesn't do anything, though...not sure why everything is getting LEDs thrown on it nowadays.

Yup, my one and only complaint with the Eclipse series is the lackluster backlighting, they could have done a far better job. Other than that, I can't find anything else that I don't like about the board.

Actually how meny of you gues really need the backlights on your keyboard.
i mean i find the monitor light to be more that enough for me to be able to see while typing in the dark room.

imo its just unnecessary keyboard PORN.

Thank you for this review as I was thinking of getting 1. and 4. I have tried the nostromo and other types of gaming keypads & they were too POOFY SLOW.

I use the microsoft natural multimedia keyboard. I rarely if ever use or need the "specialty" type keys, it is just comfy to type with Yet the spacebar sounds & feels clunky.

Since I game with the NUMPAD keys always in most games & just bind the keys to it I don't have to worry of using the clunky space bar to "jump". Plus if I need extra keys to bind guns or turrets I use home-page dwn or the rest of the keyboard.

Macro binding is a pain/useless really especially if you reinstall os/frequently testing. I tried to use it for UT or xmp when I had a left hand injuries from biking/ball and couldn't use my middle finger or ring finger at different times but still HAD to play despite the pain lol. The nostromo & other gaming keypads/boards were so slow and actually were uncomfortable to push repeatedly. My patience with it would last a few days...then it would be returned. I don't need more finger aerobics for gaming.

Those of you who have bought Deck keyboards...where is the best place to buy them? Do they have a ergonomic version?

EDIT: Nevermind. I just found out that there are no natural ones and it looks like buying directly from Deck is the best option since their prices are the same as performance pcs.

I love my G15 and I'm a solid ICTF player (where movement and quick reaction is critical). The keybaord backlighting is great (and not just cause it goes with the Razer headphones) and I find the keystroke to be just fine.
I don't see why the LCD size is a problem, it does fold down?

Saitek Eclipse for me. I haven't used a keyboard that I've loved nearly as much as I love this one. :D

I think I'll buy a second one just incase anything happens to this one, considering I'm not too fond of the look of their new Eclipse II 'board.

G15 is awesome... BF2142 1.10 patch supports the LCD, cool stats and animations. I run MB5 and can toggle between 4 pages of temps, memory and cpu usage. It's so helpfull monitoring your hardware while running SLI applications. I purchased it from NCIX for 60$CAN 6 months ago :).

i did some searching through the thread, but couldn't find any one who recommended a Wolf King Timberwolf. That is an actual gaming keyboard. All the other keyboards are just normal keyboard with fancy lights and LCDs  .
