With dual 7800gtx's at what mhz does it equalize? Is 3100mhz still not enough? Or is it like the point of when more mhz makes no difference is scores? Sorry for the neub kwestun'

Scores will increase, even if it is a small increase, if you keep raising the MHz. 7800GTX SLI is best for large screen (24" CRT or larger) and high resolutions (1600X1200 and larger) with maximum details on. Other than that, any7800GT/GTX SLI and and X1800/X1900 Crossfire setup is really only good for high scores and bragging rights. I have a pair of 6800GS in SLI and they will play any game @ 1600X1200 with maximum details and easily maintain 60FPS+ (except maybe F.E.A.R).

With SLI/CF even a 3.5ghz dual core can hold them back in 3dmark. CPU is always a bottle neck in games.

That was the answer I was looking for...So if I am told I am cpu limited, it is a correct statement as everybody is cpu limited....

not everyone..... mainly those running two gpus.

while we are on topic, at point do you think a user has enough cpu power for a single X1900XTX? I know you can never have enough but you know what I mean... what would be considered the threshold where you are a tad low to be running a card like the XTX?

Kinda hard to say but 2.8 dual or 3.0 single core should be plenty fast for it and easy to hit.

fire, so for 2x7800gts, what speed would my cpu need to be running at to decrease the bottleneck the most?

cpu limited at 1024x768 or 3dmark but if game with a high res monitor you wont be cpu limited if you play at 1900x1200+ resolutions with AA and AF...

No one knows the point where more Mhz on cpu will not improve any 3d scores because CPU's have always been the bottle neck with current cards. 3100Mhz single core is definitly not the point where any thing past will show no improvement. It actually seems in a benchmark prog like 3d05 100mhz is worth about 100pts past 3ghz with newer cards, im not sure when that would start to widdle down.
you have an opteron 148 like myself and personally I wouldnt spend any more $ on single core because for the performance boost you might get your going to have to spend a lot more. and some bad clocking fx-57 are about the same speed as an opteron 148. So if your asking about this because you want to upgrade go to fx-60/62 or save your $.

at 1280 way above 3ghz.
At that res in hl2 an x800xt need a 2.7ghz to get it's max fps.
Of course your not playing at 1280...

It does not scale linearly but with proper drivers, it is a function of IPC, Clock Speed and Number of core..
Take a Dual core up to 3Ghz should be sufficient for now...
