View Full Version : I wanna use a Peltier???

O.k I have a decent watercooling setup I think but now with my Opty 146 I need to get it cooler for better overclocks.
ATM my w/c consists of pump > cpu > 2 x 6800gt's in parallel > dual BIX radiator > reservoir and then back tp the pump.
I am looking at buying the Swiftech MCW5002-64T cpu block that uses a 226watt peltier.
I also realise I'm gonna need a norther power supply for this but thats not my issue here.
What sort of troubles may I come across using this type of setup? Will my Two 6800gt's suffer too much heat from the peltier? Or should I run the cpu/peltier on a separate system?
Or even If I use a larger radiator such as a triple 120mm fan radiator would that be enough?

I would really love to do this but I need as much input as I can to do this.

Thanks to all.:toast:

You need to either put the pelt on a separate loop with a 3x120mm rad or add a 3x120mm rad to the current loop, and probably double up that pump.

Geez! 3x120mm rad for one pelt. I was only thinking of using a 1 x 120mm rad for the pelt!. Man was I wrong. Only coz I don't have enough space though.

My advice is Don't do it!
Too much risk to expensive hardware for too little gain. If you need xtreme cooling go to a chiller or direct phasechange.

But it's soo much easier, building a chiller is pretty though, and phasechange is hella expensive
AFAIK this is the only solution for people who want sub ambient (and sometimes even sub 0) temperatures, but don't want to spend 600$ on it, or find a fridge to mod.

Well guys I looked into phase cooling and it would be obviously the best for maximum overclocks but I use my pc all the time and have ot switch on the phase 10 or 15 mins before i use the pc would really become annoying I think. If I had another pc to just do normal use on it then I would go straight to phase.
From what I've seen some people are gwtting quite good resluts out of using pelts, If done properly I think I would see some alright results.
I can get my hands on a fairly cheap phase unit, $150AU, but it's not in a "nice" case, its just open on a bench, which prolly most of you hardcore oc'ers do that anyway but I'm a man of presentation, I like things do look as well as they go. But meh, that's just me I spose.

Thanks so far guys.

BTW, Swiftech have a cpu water block with a pelt in it, 226watt, you think that might be o.k to use?

More like 3 mins or less. You can turn on at the same time if ur not booting high ass clocks.

Great deal, I'd get it and mod into a case.

the dangerden and swiffy's are both great. I'm a bigger fan of Dangerden but they'll both perform about the same. I think if you got an EXTREME BIX single or double it would be enough. I'm gonna be running 1 pelt and one non-pelt on a bipx3 whihc I think will work fine.

Yeah thanks for the input so far guys, please keep it coming as I need as much info as I can. Like I said phase would definately be the go but using one of those Swiftech blocks would make it so much neater, but I know it wouldn't perform as well a phase but I want neatness as well. If I just had the mobo sitting on the bench in no case I would go phase.

The DangerDen will NOT perform as well as the swiftech 5002. This is well established.

My suggestions are:
-swiftech 5002 with whatever coldplate config you want (I made mine but you can buy it too)
-2x 120x2 swiftech rads (jabtech has best price)
-Iwaki md-20rzg from ebay (cheap, powerful)
-"320w" 50mm pelt
-meanwell s-12-320
-4x 120mm Sanyo Denki's (from J-mag here)
-Sunbeam rheobus (from jab-tech, should be $10)

Total should be ~$300-325.

What the 226watt pelt/cpu water block by Swiftech no good?

It's good. I'm not even sure the "320W" is really rated accurately. It probably is about the same.

I also should mention that you aren't going to get much better clocks on your setup with a pelt. I hate to be pessimistic, but that's just been my experience.
