Hi all, I'm in the process of building a new system, I'd like to know compatibility and also just sound opinions from other members. Here's the list of components I'm thinking of so far.

Motherboard: DFI Lanparty Ultra-D or SLI-D, One thing I would like as a feature on the motherboard however is SATA II 3.0Gb/s. I've heard different stories on whether or not either of these boards support this. So if they don't, please suggest a board that will support it.

Processor: AMD Opteron Dual Core 170, good price, good stock clocks, what more is there to say. Just want to know if it will be compatible with said boards above on shipping bios.

Memory: Here's where I'm at a little bit of a loss, I wan't 2x1024 for sure, but IC's is where I'm just not that familiar in results and compatibility. Samsung and Infineon seem to be the two contenders, so please suggest to me which IC is best and why.

Video Card: I'm happy to go with the Ultra-D Motherboard, as I don't plan on SLI nor Crossfire (don't have the budget), the card I'm looking at right now is the X1900XT. The 7900GTX doesn't sound like it will be much more than the 7800GTX 512 except for a 90nm revision. Is that really worth the wait, instead of just going with the X1900XT now?

HDD: I'm planning on purchasing 2x80GB Hitachi Deskstar 3.0GB/s SATAII drivers, very inexpensive, and in a raid 0 that'll be about 160GB plenty of storage for my needs.

The parts I'll be recycling into this new build will be:

OCZ Powerstream 520ADJ (non-SLI Version so 1x +12v rated at 33A, I'm thinking this will be more than enough to power this system. If you think otherwise though, please suggest something better.)

Lian Li PC-65 Enclosure

Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum (This was purchased back in October of '05, will this or will this not be compatible with the Ultra-D? If not, I'll send it in and use my back up soundcard for the time being.)

D-Link Wireless G510 PCI Network Adaptor

Optical and Floppy drives.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks all. :)

for Ram I would go with UCCC (samsung)
for Graphics card.. wait
That PSU will not cut it..
and drop the floppy and get a USB one..

Wait for vid, get a full sized case, get a badder ass PSU, buy an x-fi music, I can't remember the last time I ever used a floppy drive.

Really, 520ADJ won't cut it, for single card solution? I'm suprised about that, what do you suggest then?

check that out to give you an idea, even if your not planning right now 2 video cards, its good to know yo have that power backing you up.

Well man I personally think that 520w OCZ Powerstream will be more than enough. I dont know what these other guys are thinking, and especially if you are just staying with a single card GPU set-up there is no need to get anything bigger than your 520w.

Hell I have a 420w Powerstream running my 3700+ San Diego at 3.15 ghz at 1.7v, 7800gt, 2 HD's and a optical drive all without the rails even moving between idle and load.

Plus since you already have the PSU you can build your system around it and if some weird reason it actually cant handle it, just upgrade then. But there is no point in upgrading before you even know if you need to or not.

The Powerstream 520W will be fine with one 7900 card and one DC Opteron. The 7900 cards will apparently take even less power than the 7800s.

Yes, the problem in that article was with Dual +12v Rail PSU's I have the older 520ADJ that has only 1 +12v @ 33A. The problem in that article was the systems were crapping out because SLI was demanding a lot more from the one +12v that they were running on could handle. When using a Single Rail PSU or a PSU with dual rails but more amps on each +12v, the problem mysteriously vanished.

Well IF you want best performance for a ultra low price I would wait a few more months and buy an low or mid range Conroe cpu from Intel for less then you pay on a Opteron 170 and still way out perform it... Other wise you'll be driving yourself crazy in a few months when everyone is bragging about their new Conroe's performance in benchmarks and gaming while paying less then you... You'll be saving yourself a BIG headache in the future man.;)

The 520ADJ is a great PSU for your uses....go for it. :)

Motherboard: If you aren't going SLI and don't plan on doing it anytime soon, get the DFI Lanparty Ultra-D. Why bother paying for SLI capabilities if you aren't going to get another video card before you get a new CPU (which will make your mobo obsolete anyway).

Proc: Good choice (imo), try to get a good stepping. I've got a 0544 XPMW and am capping out at 2.65GHz (which seems to be the max OC for a LOT of people with some steppings)

Memory: I'll let some more knowledgable people answer this.

Video Card: I say wait on the video card too if you can. If you don't have an old card, can't get one from a friend, or don't feel like waiting though, don't feel too bad about only getting a 7800.

HDD: Good

PSU: Good

Floppy: What?

LOL, stop doggin' on my floppy drive. I just can't give up this little guy. From bios flashes to word doc transportation from home to school. I know I should just get a thumb drive and be done with it, but If I need more data on something than what a floppy can hold than I'll just burn it onto a CD-RW...

I'll wait for more results from this conroe system when there's more to tell. Right now I'm sitting on an AMD Sempron 2800+ and onboard video with this computer. I'm not looking at putting any more money into this S754 system, so I will not upgrade CPU the CPU on this machine.

I just miss my games too much, so that's why I'm upgrading soon.

If Conroe is all that it's cracked up to be, I'll probably hop on the bandwagon when It's released as well. So no worries 'bout that...

Here's my recommendations:
Motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813123258) - It has all the overclocking features DFI has, in addition to a really cool POST LED thingy. I know it has SATA II compatibility because I have a WD SE16 250GB sata II drive and its full bandwidth. Its cheap but good quality.

G.Skill 2GB 2-3-2-5 @ DDR400 kit (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231032) - If you're mainly gaming I would recommend this stuff
G.Skill 2GB 3-4-4-8 @ > DDR500 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231021) - This should get ~265 or greater if you want to benchmark, but I think that the low latency stuff will give better gaming performance.

What's the 200MHz SPD timings on the HZ kit? Would it be 3-3-3-x? Or would you be able to pull 2-3-2-x out of it @ DDR400?

lol oh you wont be disappointed trust me man...:D Looks like Conroe will OC very well too even with just a heat sink and fan... Lower temps, low volts, better OCing, low prices, unbeatable performance at stock, what more do you want? :rocker:
