Hey, I got a new video card because my screen didnt have anything come up, and I put the new video card in, start it up, and still nothing comes up on the screen. But its different now. With the new card, everything in the computer turns on, then it beeps 5 times. Two normal beeps, and then 3 fast beeps. I then turn it off, and turn it back on, same thing every time. With my old card, it would just turn on, and nothing would come up. No beeps. I would then restart it (with the old card) and it would work. I put the new one in, it didnt work, put the old one in, deleted the old drivers, put the new one back in, and it still didnt work. So what the heck could the problem be then? Also, does anyone know what that beep code means? 2 normal, 3 quick? my mobo manual doesnt have a beep code chart.
Please help, I dont know what the problem is.
Thanks,
Derek
P.S. Two things. First, I forgot to say what two video cards I'm using. My old, trusty, original Leadtek Nvidia 6600GT. And the one I bought today, it was just some random, cheapest one at best buy (I am returning it) a ATi Radeon X300SE. Also, under version of CPU-Z on motherboard, it says ASUS A8N5X ACPI Bios Revision 0401. The date is 10/11/05.
What type of slots do they take up? Is one pci and the other agp? or?

I think (not sure seems how I don't have my little book here at work) 2 long beeps and 3 short beeps is no video in an AGP slot!! Or maybe memory latency error! try replacing the memory if you have any sticks laying around. put one chip in at a time and see what you get that way! also take chips out and see what the beeps are then!

Try and log on to ASUS site, and find your MB, there's always a manuel there for your MB.
The only code i remember without the manual, is the repeately short beeps, which means that you haven't applied the power to your graphic card.

Hey. They are PCI-E 16x. And that would be really weird if that's what it means. And it isnt memory, because I've run MemTest86 several times, no problems. Just wondering, would I have to install the drivers first for the new video card to work, or shouldnt it just work right off the bat (And then install drivers when in OS)?
Thanks,
Derek
Just saw your message frisch. And I have the manual here in front of me, and I have looked at every page, no beep codes. I even looked online at the online manual, no beep codes there either. Now that's gotta be one of the dumbest things I've ever seen, not having the beep code in the damn manual.

You simply can't install drivers before, windows will recognize the card and ask for drivers

Ok. What I meant by install it before is by using my old video card, installing them, turning off, and installing the new vid. card. But I agree with you, it sohuld simply start up.

the codes are kind of easy to do but hard to get used to! what they do is say one long beep looks kind of like this- - - and then short beeps ---- you need to count the beeps! I used paper and pin when I started!! then look up how many you have and in what order and see what they say the problem may be! if you look on the asus site they may tell you in a little more about what each one means!

I linked to your MB on ASUS site, i can see that there's some new bios for you, 0602.
There's manual, drivers and so on.

Alright, I'll try that tonight. Do I download only the newest one, or each one leading up to the new one?
Thanks,
Derek

This could be alot of things, I'd just start swapping components if ya have a friend or another comp and see what works/doesn't work. First throw the vid card in another comp and see if it works fine. if you said you've tested mem, then its either the vid card, cpu, or mobo. I've had mobo's die and stop giving video like you are talking about. I've also had a cpu fry itself, and this will obviously give no video as well. yet will start up and seem to run.
Just go through each component, tiral and error and figure out which one is causing hte problem...thats what I do...never failed me before....
GL!
P.S. I doubt if its a bios problem.....pci-x is pci-x.....and I don't see how that would cause a problem
P.P.S. Lol I just thought of something else...a few times I've gotten in a hurry and forgot to plug up power to the vid card if the vid card has it....and its does the same thing aswell with the beeping.... I know this seems obvious...but its an easy thing to forget in a hurry....

Hey. Thanks for the tips. The only problem is that I dont have any other parts I can use to test. I suppose I could buy the parts one at a time, but then it gets all complicated with returns and stuff. I will probably update BIOS anyway, cuz mine are out of date. If that doesnt work, I would guess its my mobo. Maybe my slots dont read the video cards, due to lack of power or something.
Thanks,
Derek

I updated BIOS, still doesnt work. In fact, we were watching Old School last night, and about 1.2 hours in, the monitor just shut off again. It makes me wonder if its a software thing? I really dont want to spend $50 on someone to look at my computer. Any ideas? Thanks.

Ten bucks says it's your PSU that's the culprit, especially if it's a generic Long Wang Phat one. Your vidcards both need that extra power fly-lead, yeah? Try changing the connector for an identical one (swap with the floppy drive if it's a small 4-way), try taking a device or three off circuit (a burner, say, or that second drive, but remember to unplug the IDE as well) and then powering up.
If you're PSU is a cheapie, or you've had it for a year or more, I will guarantee that it is no longer (if it ever truly was) capable of providing the wattage it says on the case.
How me know dis?
Same happened to me. BEEEEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!! Changed the Unicase 400W (ha!) PSU out for a 550W Antec, and she's happy as a long pig in a trench full o' slops.

I'll try a new PSU, but I have an Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU, with 34A on the 12V rail. Good specs...I dont know, maybe ill try a new one though.
