what should i do with this system, it was mainly kept around for when friends come over to chill. We could all get on the same games and play. but now with everyone so busy and if they come over now they usually bring their pc.

specs are:

AMD Athlon XP Mobile 2500+ @ 2.2Ghz
1GB DDR400 Dual Channel
ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
40GB 7200rpm IDE Drive
GeForce 6600 256MB DDR AGP8X

thinking about getting a tv tuner and making it a media machine?
what else could i use it for, help me guys, dont want to let it goto waste.

Add a Tv Tuner and 3 500GB drives and make one hell of a Media Machine..
and see if you can get a nice Raid card that support Capacity and raid level migration.. Adaptec is your best bet..

How about having it crunch for XS Rosetta or for the XS Folding at Home team? Temps seem to run just a tiny bit cooler on F@H if thats a consideration..Both teams would love to have you aboard!:D

Join XS's Rosetta team, and help us do protein research AND become the #1 ranked team in the world. We are in third and chasing down the 2nd place team. We can definitely use the help in our quest. Plus, it is a very worthy cause.

The program only uses your CPU's spare cycles, and only when they are not being called upon by anything else. the program is designed to quickly back out of the way, yielding to all other activities.

Don't sell it man.. put it to good use.. with a little bit of tweaking it can be a kick ass media rig..
add a tuner card, a good raid card and a couple of drives and you will have a top edge Media set up...

Hauppauge PVR 150 + 250GB HDD + SageTV = $300 HTPC.

i dont need drives guys, thats the thing, my main pc is the storage system in my house, all the other computers have 40-120GB drives, i keep all my movies, music, program setup files on a 250GB partition shared on the network, so i would only use the 40GB to record the video or movie and then move it to the storage drive on the network.

speaking of the folding project...
i'm building a render farm at home that basically works the same way, you have multiple computers networked together all acting as one to process one task (in my case rendering videos and such). my question is, if i join will the folding project be able to correctly use my render farm? meaning it can use the processing power from all my computers and not just my main one?

And HTPCs double as very nice file servers.

And HTPCs double as very nice file servers.
especially if you have a kick ass Raid5 set up..
like 4 500GB drives ;)

Do you have a lot of computers at your house?? (3 or more). If so, make it into a file server. Instead of saving files and such to a jaz drive or burning them to a cd just save it to that comp then every comp can get it. A media machine is also a very good choice. Also, whatever it does, just make sure its rosettaing or F@H (for XS of course).
