Hey guys, I am going to be setting up a server/rendering box soon. I am going to be putting the Opteron 165 Dual Core 939 socket in there. I was wondering what kinda motherboard you guys would recommend. I use DFI for my hardcore overclocking but I don't want to overclock this processor, I just want something stable. Let me know any suggestions.

if you seriously are going to doe rendering I strongly advise an SMP setup..
as for a single s939.. Gigabyte should work fine...

If cheap, stable, and reliable is what you're looking for look no further than the EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you choose that DFI board because it's proven to be stable at even very high speeds, voltages, and temps right? So... why exactly do you want something that does not perform as well?

That aside, I might recommend getting a dual-socket 940 (or Xeon solution) instead. You can still run with only one processor in most of them, but you get the bonus of expandability on board if it looks like you'll need it (note: you will need a processor that handles dual-processor setups).

You are wrong.. for a server you want UBERSTABLE not just stable.. Socket 940 and ECC would be highly advised..

How am I wrong?

He's asking about a socket 939 pin processor, and I'm sure I gave him the best answer for that. If you get into ECC memory on a 939 board, you've not only found yourself a relatively special board, you've pretty much wasted a load of cash.

Clearly, I recommended socket 940 or Xeon instead (which would lead him to finding he would have to run ECC memory).

ECC not totally necessary... Asus PC-DL & a pair of M0 stepping 2.4ghz Xeons that will push 3.2-3.4 easily w/ non-ECC RAM is a great choice. Built one of these to have colocated in the UK and I currently have an upload server, 4 websites, 4 CSS Servers (2 x 32 slot w/ 16 bots each [zombie mod], and 2 x 24 standard play), 1 x UT2k4 Server, and 1 x BF2 Server. All of which run 100% smoothly at max capacity. It's quite the amazing rig which I pieced together for about $900-1000.

wow indeed  :toast:

Thanks for all the responses guys. I thought about a dual processor setup but I dunno if I want to spend all that money right now but if I can run a single processor in a dual board for now that would work and I could also add another later.

Yeah. Still ends up costing a little more initially, but search around eBay, you can generally find some good deals from guys who went to conventions... AMD sells some stuff for pretty low prices at those things. Then in 6 months or a year from now when you want a second processor, you'll be able to pick up a second hand one really cheap because socket F2 will be out.
