you have to get a 40 to 44pin IDE adaptor

well, since its from a laptop it probably is only 5400 rpm so it wouldn't be much use for a desktop. that is unless you're trying to salvage data from it.

Well, I just want to use it in a backup system. HOw do I get power to the thing?

i'm sure the last four pins to the right is for power, however i don't have enough experience with laptop harddrives to help you there. but i would think there would be an adapter for it.

its 44 pins like it was said the 4 extra are for power you need a converter that has a 44 to 40 pin plus floppy connector to use it just like this http://www.cablesnmor.com/hard-drive-converter.html i have one if you want it shoot me a pm and ill hook you up.

Actually your local fry's should carry 2.5" hdd to 3.5" adapter which will work with those fine for about $6 to $7. I keep few around usually to service people' notebook, etc.
Advantage of laptop hdd (some do run at 7200rpm btw, notably 60gb hitachi ones), is small form factor which fits in small system (there are HTPC crowd out there)... quietness of hdd vs many 3.5" out there. And of course, those small external HDD brick you could put these in.
