I finally have all my parts. I would really appreciate some guidance on this build. I want to get ready for the final part that will be arriving tomorrow. I have allready made the TMod bios cd a couple weeks ago.

I plan to OC but I am not sure if I should do it before or after the OS is installed

I will be using
Opteron 165 Reatil With Retail Heatsink
DFI Ultra - d
Enermax Liberty 500
2 GB GSkill UCCC
Leadtech 6800 GT
WD Sata2 250 GB KS
XP SP2
Stacker STC101

The first thing I would like to know is which bios I should use and when should I load it ... right away, after OS, etc ...

I would also like to know a general build step by step

I would like to know if I have to install Sata2 drivers, VGA drivers, and chipset drivers when XP asks for them ... if so, which ones

Should I enter bios setting right away, if so, which ones ... for the memory

Any other information you feel I should know PLEASE do not hesitate to menton

Thanks :toast: :) :) :toast:

i would try bios 704-bta first. you should overclock after windows is installed so you can test for stability. you have to install sata drivesfrom a floppy while windows is installing, but you can install the rest after it's installed. if you don't have a floppy download nlite and integrate the drivers through that.

here are the imings from gskill:

you might have to play with drive strength and tref

I assume the Sata drivers are on a floppy in the Ultra -d box

whenever i installed my SATA drive it didn't need drivers with the ultra-D

Um....I have never used SATA drivers...it is plug-n-play...

Some motherbaord I am told have to have drivers...but the DFI doesn't...well it didn't with me in the past...

Question - The MB pamflet says on 2.1 that if the heatsink already has thermal paste peel the strip off ... I am using a retail 165 heatsink and I do not see thermal paste but I see a thin layer of grey material

Do I peel this off?
I have AS5 to put on the cpu but I have not yet

I just found this - http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_869_4348%5E6678,00.html

It says not to remove it ..

So do I add AS5 to it or remove it and only use AS5

remove it and put AS5 ;)

Is there a reference guide for light error codes and beep error codes?

logic: remove the tape, clean, apply AS5.

somewhere in the manual of the motherboard

Where the bleep is memtest hiding in the bios, I cannot find it anywhere in the bios

Are these temps to high, these temps are just searching through the bios looking for memtest

according to the bios

cpu core 41 C
PWM 49 C
chipset 51 C

I just went to do memtest and it appears I have some sort of a problem with the heatsink fan. After a few seconds the fan stops and rotates in 1 / 4 quarter turns per revolution

It does not happen all the time. This is the second time it has done it in about 10 power up ( looking for memtest )

By the way, the temps I posted above were with the fan spinning. I am sure about that

What should I do?

Under Genie bios setting, scroll all the way down. You'll see run memtest86, with options of disable or enable. Also, go to pc heath status. There you can set your cpu fan to fully on, depending on temp. You can do this with the northbridge fan as well.

So you are saying the fan stops on power up sometimes because the cpu is cooler than the temp in the bios?

Should I use the Nforce Sata2 or the Silicon Sata2 inputs first?

Is it ok to load optimized defaults when you are ready to move everything from the test bench to the case?

Anytime you flash your BIOS, the first thing you want to do is load Optimized defaults. Otherwise, the board will do weird things. As far as which SATA to use, either is good...I use the NForce SATA's, but I've heard the Silicone Images one does better at high HTT....but then again, I have a 144 @ 3.1GHz, so Idunno what truth lies there.

And yes, if your processor is cool enough, your fan won't spin up in the BIOS or on boot...but will start back up in Windows. Reguardless of how cool my processor is, I like my fans on at all times, so just make sure they turn on @ the lowest possible temps to keep them running.

In the bios I enabled the .03v if not 3.2v switch and when I rebooted back to the bios I still can only move the Dram voltage by .10

Its on 2.6 so I have 2.7, 2.8, etcc ...

This (http://sysbuild.corsairmemory.com/report.aspx?id=2) was the best step-by-step build I've seen. Nice pictures and good directions. Kinda simplistic though.

How are people geting these small incremental Dram voltage settings? I can not get the +.03v increments to work?
