View Full Version : Highest clocks for 7800 GTX on air? (256mb)

MY eVGA 7800 gtx KO is currently clocked at 520/1350 and when i tried to push it to 550/1350 it started artifacting. (All in which using the default Voltage)

How high does a 7800gtx (256) run on air? cause i cant push mine any farther without getting artifacts. Would a new cooling solution help?

thanks for the replies

A better fan would help, maybe a zalman plus ram heatsinks. I'm not sure if it get you 550mhz artifact free but it might. The real question is; Do you want to spend around 50 bucks just for around 5% faster framerate? If however you do decide to volt mod it, then yes I would recommend an aftermarket cooler.

AS far as the 7800gtx w/ 256mb, i have seen 9k scores in 3dmark05.

oh i see
yes i have achieved a bit over 9k score with my single 7800 gtx but i am trying to figure out which one is casuing me to artifact. the high temps (80C on Maximum Load) or not enuff voltage

Well I havent overclocked a GPU since I killed my 9800pro... lol So ill let my fellow members give you some better advice. But in my opinion I think its a combination of both, your GPU is running hot and pumping up the volts would help. Thats why people here freeze thier cores and pump up the volts till it wont run anymore.

Edit: There are 7800s that have scored over 10k (forgot by how much), but I doubt they where 24/7 stable (artifact free).

yah but they have fx processors while im stuck while my lowly 4200+
but im not that much of an ethusiast to freeze my video card and ramp up the votages

Honestly, with these gtx's its probably both your temps and your voltages. On the stock cooler with my XFX GTX EE (490/1300 stock) I was able to hit 540/1400 w/ load @ 78C stock voltages. Anything more an the card would artifact. As soon as I switched to water 550/1410 was stable, but it needed more volts afterwards. THis is of course, not including the +40 delta, if you include those then the highest I hit on stock cooling was 580mhz and on water 590 w/ stock volts. These cards are really voltage starved so a vmod is recommended by me.

oh i see, and could u please tell me where i can go to mod my 7800 gtx?
i guess il slap it to 540/1400 like you and run it for a while to see if there is any artifacting

EDIT: go as in any guides* i mean

I have a BFG 7800 GTX at 460/1300. I have the stock cooler on (which I'm glad since I may be selling it soon for the X1900XT) but I'm wondering what are some realistic 24/7 OC speeds.

Is 480/1350 realistic? I'm going to start OCing today but I like to have an idea of what MAY be attainable without pushing it over the limits and killing the card.

Thanks in advance.

I had a pair of 7800GTX 256MB cards at 620Mhz core or so using aircooling. About 1.68v will do it (although current production yields may give better results, this was 3-4 months ago).

I'm running a XFX Extreme on 500/1350 for 24/7... it can do 520 on the core with ease.... cooling is by far an issue but it seems to suffer from lack of voltage as I can't reach 527 no matter what I try...

I'm new to OCing the video card. What voltage range would be recommended to get up to 500 for 24/7 use? I don't even know what the stock voltage is. Also, what's the best nvidia tool to OC with? Thanks.

Jason (MickeyMouse) had a card going at 650 core with a Zalman Fatality HSF. He was using 1.77V, IIRC.

I got the same on water with 1.63V (and it didn't climb much with more volts--damn geometry delta was set wrong :()....on a core that gained NOTHING from going to water (from stock). I got my card the day it came out, so might have had the same thing as FCG. Temps with the stock cooler were always awesome, but I bought the water before I got the card, so no way of knowing that.

On stock it did 520(+40)/1470 and on water it did the same (until later when I got a colder ambient and could do 540(+40)/1485)....with more volts (DO IT--really it's the only way to increase clocks!!!) I got 650(+0.....or 600[+50], geom clock was the limiting clock)/1670. 1700+ on the memory was possible with the original BIOS...did 1730 on a LOOSE BIOS and it still sucked, lol.

Stock voltage should get you above 500...if it doesn't, then get out your soldering gun and go for a ride to the high 500s, no sense in stopping at 500, frankly. And RivaTuner is the best tool to OC these....maybe PowerStrip, but that's yucky shareware :p:

Wrong linky. :(

You need the 'compare' link.

On air:

anyone

mem could clock to 1800 mhz at GT1 and 1775 all day long, just ocz copper heatsinks =>2.75v
core max around 680 mhz with SP92 and 1° air =>1.78V

i would like to know if some of you guy's high gtx clock speed can run without artifacts?
when i tested mine at 550/1400 it did not artifact in 3d mark 05 or 06 or auqamark 3 but it aritfacted in the "nature" test in 3dmark 03 during the river scene

when you don't have arties you didn't push hard enough, just find the balance between a good arti run and bad arti run:)

Hmm my 7800GTX clocked 660\1740 on aircooling, Spire copper flower on it and heatsinks I made from a AMD Ahtlon inbox cooler wich had copper bottom and aluminium fins. Got like 11,600p in 3DMark2005 with watercooled opteron144.
vgpu 1.90v and vmem 2.90v :) all was fine

edit: here u can see the card also... Opteron had coldbug damn :( but still a nice shot.
